Hello all, I am here to say that I have to surrender my club membership as I have sold my shorty to my brother. Need to make room for other basses and the SS was the first candidate.
Just want to say one thing:
Heavier gauge does not necessarily mean a heavier sound. Sure, there is more metal moving, but with the increased tension, the movements are smaller and more controlled.

I meant fat as in girth, rather than sound necessarily!
As for tone, though my experience is limited, my time with flats hasn't been successful so far. Labella flats on an Ibanez fretless had a decent enough low end; but were a bit hollow sounding, with some weird metallic overtones; The chromes on the Jag SS had the hollowness and metallic nature without the decent low end! A set of unknown flats on my Yamaha 425x were better, but not the B string, which sounded rather indistinct (I've learned that some people who use flats on a 5 sometimes use a roundwound B because of this).
With rounds : my experience has been that I can get a pleasing fat sound out of them, either with tone shaping or just by waiting for them to go dead!
True, and having really fat strings sometimes increases weird-metallic-overtoneyness IME.
M45S are the only ones I have found to available here in the UK so far - any good?
A few of us have had success using GHS Precision Flats on our Jag. For me they are keepers. It sounds like you may prefer them.
I do however have to use a string tree/retainer for the A string
Did you have to do anything to the nut or bridge to accommodate the thicker strings?
I'm trying!!! For some reason i get this error message whenever i try to upload a photo ("security error: user may not have permission to access this feature") and i've tried to fix it in the settings but no luck
i'm using the app on the iphone if anyone else knows how to fix?Ok so onto technical topics. I'm a brand newbie at this, the Jag is my 1st bass & the 2 of us haven't quite got to know each other so well yet. But i love her already! I have a few questions:
1. Stock standard strings vs new ones: i feel like these strings feel pretty good to play but what would be a good "upgrade" considering i like strings to be fairly tight/tense & play heavy rock style so need pretty good volume for an admittedly soft touch (i'm a girl and have girly hands lol). Any suggestions? Or would it not make too much difference? Initial opinion is that the stock strings are a bit weak...
2. Volume/tone knobs: i thought there were 6 knobs (3 double knobs) but the bottom part with the dot marker seems to move when i turn the top one. Is this normal? And also, is there not just a volume knob or are they one for each pick-up & a tone knob? I really haven't done my research well hey
does anyone have suggestions as to how to maximise the fatness a punchy tone thats not too trebly? Either settings or new pick-ups, i'm completely open to suggestions

Yep - top knob is the P (top) pickup volume, middle knob is the J (bridge / bottom) pickup volume, and the small knob at the bottom is a tone control.
The nut was too small. I took about 5 minutes with a bastard file but I had to do the same for 105's. They have a heavy set that has 115's but that site doesn't appear to have them anymore. Either way I play a lot of rock and alternative stuff so I use rounds and these are great. Drop d is not floppy because the tension is right.

The string thing really depends on the type of music you're playing. Flats for old school thump, rounds for a more modern sound. The controls are Vol(neck)/Vol(bridge)/Tone. Usually the first mod folks do to a Jag SS is replace the pickup(s), at the very least it's the bridge pickup to try an match the power of the neck pickup.
This is a good bass to learn how to setup and modify your bass. What I've done to mine:
- Replace both pickups with a Dimarzio DP126 set
- Replace the bridge with a Schaller (personal preference)
- Replace the electronics with a Certainbass varitone circuit.
- Put a new set of D'Addarios rounds on it.
- Some cosmetic stuff like a Telecaster bass bridge cover.
