Squier MusicMaster Vista Club

Hello
I tried looking through this post and didn't find the measurement I was looking for maybe I missed it. Could anyone tell me if the spacing of the Squier Vista Bass pick guard holes (that hold the pickup in place) are different from the original 70's musicmaster basses? I recently ordered a replacement Big Sis from Sentell and was told it would be a drop in replacement but when it arrived the pickup was too narrow to use the pick guard holes in my Vista Bass. My pickguard vista bass mounting holes are 80mm center to center and the pickup that was sent had 75mm center to center. I had to mount it Pbass style with foam and leave the holes in my pick guard open. Not ideal but it still works. Does anyone own an original 70s musicamster bass with OG pickguard who can measure the pick guard mounting hole distance ? The pickup does sound pretty awesome and the giant pole pieces look extra cool.

As a person who owns both a '78 Fender Musicmaster and a Squier Musicmaster reissue I can confirm that yes they are different measurements.

Coincidentally I have a Sentell Lil Sis in my Fender Musicmaster. I also have the Mustang version from Sentell in another parts bass. That is unfortunate that there was some confusion over the sizes. My Musicmaster pickup was a drop in but I never replaced the one in my Squier Musicmaster, I love the original Vista Tone pickup in that bass.

I have several pickguards at home that I've changed out from both basses over the years and could measure/photograph for you but I don't have any "fancy" measuring gauge. Just a ruler.

Thank You WI Short Scaler for checking your collection and for your reply, I just wanted confirmation that the pick guard's mounting holes were different (a little wider) on the Squier Musicmaster vs Original 70's Fender Musicmasters. I have measured my squire with a ruler @ around 80mm and assuming the pickup that they sent was correct for 70's Fender musicmasters which was around 75mm. Just good to know, for me and others. I assumed everything was the same and only did a quick fit check before I disassembled and soldered up the new one etc. so that was my mistake and an unwanted surprise. Anyone else looking to replace a pickup in this manner make sure you double check the measurements you need. No fault to Sentell as they were quick to respond and they make an excellent pickup! Thanks Again!

Well you already know the crucial part. Yes, the Squier measurements are wider than the original.

Did the Vista Tone pickup fail? That would be a real shame. I am very happy with my Sentell pickups but that Vista Tone is still better.

The guards wrap around the end of the neck differently too. And the Squier version had a much nicer 4 saddle bridge and string through body mount.

When I rebuilt my avatar bass, a '78 Musicmaster, I was lucky enough to find one of those bridges. Like finding something even more rare than a needle in a haystack now.

Still love 'em both though.

The vista tone did not fail. I just wanted to try a different pickup. There is something about the upper harmonics with the vista tone that kinda fights itself/dissonance in my ears for lack of a better description. I have the pickup set pretty low so it's not the phasing sound when too close to the strings. I have another sonic blue and they behave the same way. I have chromes on both

That makes sense in that I believe all of us like different things.

If you ever think of selling that Vista Tone pickup I'd sure be interested.

If I scored a garage sale deal on this I might consider selling, but i didn't

Where did you find one? Those pink ones I believe are the rarest of the rare.

I've had mine for about 20 years. It was very cheap but the body looked like it had been used as a garden shovel so a refin was necessary.
Pink one was eBay listing from Japan I rolled the dice and got lucky, I found my sonic blue one guitar center online wichita KS rolled the dice on that as well and it must have been stashed in a closet for a long time cause it still has the plastic on the pickguard and it felt brand new but I paid a lot for it 750.

Hi, club!
I’m a member, #21, that sold my Vista and regretted it. I’ve bought the one in the classifieds here, should come this week. Happy to have one again, same color even. I’d love a shell pink if anyone wants to swap.

My question is this….

Does anyone have the gig bag that the promo material says comes with the bass?

I just read the whole thread and the question has been asked before but without any answers. Mostly a curiosity but if I could get one, I would. The other one I bought didn’t have it and the one I just bought doesn’t have it. I wonder if they were cheap and fell apart over the years? I dunno…

Hi there, looks like a lovely bass you got there, great in white. I've had all the other three colours but not a white one (yet!)

The tuners look OK to me, but maybe my ageing eyes can't see what the string alignment issue is?

The stock bridges on the Vistas are OK (IMHO) & do the job fine. That Albridge version looks good, though a bit pricey. Not sure it I could see it being that much of an improvement over the stock bridge. Can understand upgrading an original US Musicmaster with the Albridge as those bridges don't allow individual string adjustment.

I'd wait until you get it. Put a fresh set of (medium scale) strings, get a good setup on it & try it out.
You might be pleasantly satisfied with it stock & no need for any upgrades :)

I've had three Vista Musicmasters. All great basses - big tone & lovely to play.
The only issues I've had was dead pickups on two of them which I had to get rewound, and a nut cracking on one which I replaced with a Graph Tech 'Tusq'.
However, I have shielded cavities & replaced the pots on all of them with superior CTS ones, as I don't think the original pots are that good.

Enjoy your new Vista & welcome to the Vista Musicmaster gang! :)
