Squier P pup; white wire, black wire?

Hey all. I'm getting ready to put together a parts bass/project and I have a squire P set I'm going to use in combo with a piezo bridge. My question is on the split pup; one side has 2 blacks, and the other side has 2 whites. How do I tell which is the treble side pup, and the bass side for these guys? Is there a quick multimeter check I could do?
I've had these parts in my bin for a while, but can't remember which side is which.
I admit I did not search for this answer. Not lazy, just didn't know how to ask in 1 or 2 words.

If you tie both white wires together and both black wires together (typical parallel mode) the blacks go to ground and whites signal to pot lug. If you want you want high output and slightly subdued highs then wire coils in series. Hook the white on one side to the pot. Hook the black on that same side to the white on the other end and connect its black to back of pots case for ground. Be sure to wire both pickups in like manner.

Parallel wiring is not standard for P pickups. And for that matter, parallel wiring is not well favored by players. Fender's P basses with series/parallel switches were a flop.

If the two pickup halves are identically wound, you need to wire them series opposing, or else they won't be humbucking.

Place the pickups side by side so that the terminals are oriented the same way. For example, both halves with terminals up and towards you. The right terminal of one half should connect to the right terminal of the other half. The remaining terminal wires are then signal and ground. Alternatively, the left terminal of one half could be connected to the left terminal of the other half. And again the two remaining terminal wires would be signal and ground.

This assumes that both halves are wound in the same direction, and this is typically the case, as far as I know.

Something else to note:

One of the halves will have the output lead connected to the outermost wrap of coil wire on that half, and the other half will have the output lead connected to the innermost wrap on that other half.

It helps shield the pickup if the output lead connected to the outermost winding is grounded. The outer part of the winding has a very low impedance to ground in that case, and shields the remainder of the coil.

This is good info mega. My original question was about the 2 halfs. On one of them the wires are white. On the other half they are black. I was just wondering which half was which. I guess the question boils down to, do the different colored wires signify a different coil wind of some sort, whether it's gauge of wire, and/or number of turns? But it could also just be a production aid, but I don't see a value add there, so I'm still stumped as to why each half is different.
 
If the two coils are not wired together in series already, plus you have four dangling wires instead of three, I'd check that they will hum cancel when used together first. (They may not be from the same pickup originally). The easiest way is to see if the tops of the bobbins attract magnetically. If they don't you can either use one bobbin upside down, or if they have ceramic magnets, you can remove one, flip it and reglue it.

You should definitely test the DC resistance with your multimeter. Each coil should be in the region of 2-6 kOhms, and the coils should be within 10% of one another.

If the coils are magnetically opposite, then next you need to wire them so that their signals are in phase. The way to determine phase is to connect your multimeter across each coil and measure the polarity of the voltage that is produced as you remove a little screwdriver or nail or something that is attached to the magnets. You'll need to set the meter to millivolts DC. Negative on pull-off is sort of the standard. (FWIW, it doesn't really matter whether you get a positive reading or a negative on "pull-off", just as long as both coils are the same.) Mark each coil lead that had the black probe connected with a piece of tape or something. For the moment, call these "negative" leads.

Now you have to work out which wire is the start and which is the finish of each coil.

I'm afraid this is a common myth. With exposed pole pieces in a simple/vintage fender design, it's important to actually have the inner windings at earth, otherwise you'll have a buzz whenever you brush the tops of your pickups with your fingers. And copper taping the outside of the coil, or running the outer windings at earth potential, makes little or no difference to the shielding of the coil. (Some say that they can hear a difference in tone when a coil is reversed due to capacitance, but I can't and that's really getting OT)

You can just remove the cover and look, but that can be hard, especially if the pickup is potted. So the best way is to connect each coil to an amp (solder it to a jack or aligator clip it to a guitar lead). The wire that you marked with tape should be connected to the sleeve of the jack. Avoid touching any exposed metal solder lugs or wire and turn up the amp till you start to hear a little single coil hum. Then carefully touch the tops of the magnets and if you get a louder buzz, then you'll need to wire these in reverse to this when you put them in the bass, so you can go ahead and call the wire from each coil that you marked with tape as "positive" instead of "negative".

Finally, you need to decide which coil you are most likely to touch while playing. THis is because only one will be silent when you touch the magnets when the two are in series. For me it's the E/A coil because I rest my thumb on the E string just there. (If your hand is nowhere near the pickup when you play, or you plan to use non-hole type covers, or perhaps you plan to earth the magnets in some way, I guess you could skip all this, but it doesn't hurt to get it right.) Some pick players tend to touch the D/G coil with their ring and little fingers.

Now that you know which wire goes to the start of the wind, the phase of the coils, and that they actually will humcancel with eachother, you should mark the bobbin with + and - or something and remove the original single wires. You should use shielded wire for pickups, and that matter, any hi-Z signal wire that's more than an inch long.

The poles are exposed, but not raised. But this is some nitty-gritty that helps in the overall quest.
But my basic question is still: Why is one half all white wires, and the other half is all black?
They (it) came from a bone stock squire P bass. What possible benefit would the factory have for using different wire colors other than to denote different winding combos?

It makes no sense. One coil is usually connected to the other with a single black wire or a single white wire, or even a single yellow wire. When they are separated, you often find two blacks on one, then a single white on the other. Or a black and white on one and a single black on the other, or a yellow and a white on one and a single black on the other ... etc. etc... There's only ever three wires in the first place.

I can't imagine any factory that would wire both ends of a coil with the same coloured wire. This makes me think it's been rewired at some stage. Or perhaps one bobbin has been replaced.

Did it come out of your own bass? Or is it secondhand? Does each bobbin have a long and a short wire? Or are they all the same length?

Without following the steps in my post, there's no real way to know which wire is which. And as I said, you should ditch the single wires anyway, in favour of shielded wire.



If you are a bit daunted by my (sorry, a bit wordy!) post, then you could always just wire it up like this, and see if it works:

If it sounds OK and doesn't hum too much, but both coils hum when you touch the tops, just reverse the phase of the whole pickup by reversing the hot and earth wires. This will give you one coil that is silent when you touch the top, and one that hums a little. Swap the coil positions if you tend to touch the hummy one...

You are correct about the poles being more sensitive in that case.

However, if the poles are not exposed, or contact or proximity to the poles does not occur, the shielding effect is hardly a myth.

I have a set of '62 reissue P bass pickups sitting on my bench. When the outer layer of a coil is grounded, the coil is insesitive to contact with the pickup cover. I can even remove the cover and touch the coil itself with no increase in noise. The coil is very sensitive to noise if I swap the connections so that the outer layer is not grounded, even just touching the cover. A grounded layer of foil around a coil with a hot outer layer works just as well.

I did neglect to specify the exact conditions, but it's not unusual to be ungrounded (yourself ungrounded, not the bass) and near the pickup. But if there is no noise source in close proximity (like an ungrounded bass player), then yes, it makes little difference.

Are the wires all long, long enough to reach the controls?

If one wire from each is long, and one wire short, and no rewiring was done, it could be an E/A half from one set, and a D/G half from another set. Otherwise, I would have to guess they were either rewired, or set up for series/parallel switching. Colors make no sense though in that case; should be a black and white on each half at least, to identify polarity.

Can you remove the covers and see the coil wire? Especially where the coil wire comes off of the terminal eyelets? Do the two coil wires coming from the terminals themselves extend to the coil itself without crossing each other? If they do, the halves are wound in the same direction. (Hope that makes sense)
I believe they typically do, but can you confirm it?

Also, if you face the two halves towards each other, (tops facing each other), do they atrract or repel?

OK, I think I solved the mystery. Closer inspection reveals a non factory solder job on the half with black wires. So, the black wires are not stock issue, the white ones are.
I believe that's how I acquired them, from a bass that was repaired, but then it broke again. I replaced the pup to keep the kid happy and he let me have the old ones. Stuck 'em in a drawer and forgot about them. Solder job was pretty good. It took a magnifier to see the difference. Also, there was script on the black wires whereas the white ones have no script.
