well I for one think you should spend the extra 900 bucks so you don't get made fun of by your friends.. i am sure they won't be able to think of anything else to make fun of you about so that will shut them up for good!

There's no difference in the durability of basses. Generally speaking.
Ones that were abused and played constantly since the 60's are still around and doing fine.
Does the Squier Mike Dirnt bass have the same chunky super thick neck like the Fender version does?

squire basses are great value for money, i have the precision special and it very rarely goes out of tune, i have no intention of modding it either because it sounds fine the way it is.
The body on the VM P-bass is kind of an antique white and the pickguard is white. Looks very classy in person. I'll be playing this bass for a long time.
the neck is great on the Squier MD, IMO. Nowhere as chunky as the 50's P (which, although chunky, is pretty comfortable...so far).
I've been playing a Squier and a Sadowsky side by side at practice these past few weeks.
You'll be just fine with the Squier.

Don't worry about the fact that the Squier is a Mike Dirnt signature model if you like the bass for what it is anyway. I have a Fender Mark Hoppus bass I love. I actually bought it without even knowing who Mark Hoppus was. I don't even really care who he is now, I still love the bass though.

Nobody is laughing mate, well the genuine bass players and musicians aren't anyway. Those that do laugh have expensive instruments that they cant play, and are only in it for the pose,...you can tell by some of their comments, its all about how they "look"
I am a novice as well, but have done mountains of research from Alembic to Squire. There is nothing wrong with Squire, it is Fenders entry level instrument range, and Fender wont endorse crap, they still put their name on the instrument.
Get your Squire and enjoy it, and like Lonote said, you should be able to be buried with it. And you should only get positive comments on this post.
I really don't like the bass (hate the neck) but Mike can play.
Listen to Longview and to a lesser extent Basket Case. I LOVE playing those songs!

I'm not laughing at all! Nuthin' wrong with Squier! In fact, Bass Player Magazine has named the Squier Vintage lineup as the best value under $700.
I traded a bunch of unused gear for a used Squier Affinity P Bass that was that was tagged at $125. Spent $25 on a gig bag, $35 for new pickups (EMG Selects), $15 for a Tort pickguard. Did all the work myself and, for about $200, got myself a very nice backup bass.........
For a few dollars more, I grabbed this one.......no mods required. Awesome right out of the box........
I have no qualms about gigging with either one.......Squier quality has come a loooooong way..........buy it, play it, enjoy it. What others think or say doesn't matter!
When the time comes to upgrade, you'll still have a nice little backup bass that you can rotate into your regular lineup or have fun modding........without a big upfront investment.

I just picked up a vm p bass, excellent can hold its own against a MIA anyday...my thought on MIA,MIM,MIJ or whatever is that they are all made by underpaid factory workers, for all we know they are all made in the same factory

Not to stray from the original topic but where did you get the tort pickguard for the Squier? I can't seem to find one for mine.
P.S. I have a black Squier Affinity P and for just learning I think it is great for starting out.
