I'm a sucker for short scales and weird basses, so when the Rascal came out, I had to have one, because it was both. I found a lovely example at the LMS and after 5 minutes of hands on, I knew it wasn't for me. It's a big bass and on the heavy side, which sort of defeats one of the benefits of a short scale.

The headstock is cool and I love the offset fretboard markers. The dual WRHBs sound gnarly and the whole thing plays fine, but the size and weight didn't work for me. Do I wish FMIC would offer the exact same package, but on the Mustang platform? Yes, yes I do.

Anyway, I would try to play one if I were you before plunking down your hard earned cash.

I had one, sold it, regretted it, got another one.

It is 100% it’s own beast and takes some time to get used to the feel and sound, but if you’re willing to work with it to figure it out, the payoff is huge.

Also it is absolutely stunning.

It helps if you don’t think of it as a traditional short scale at all. It’s actually a regular size bass, and weighs the same as one. The 30" scale length mainly applies to the fretboard.

I wouldn't buy it, definitely not without playing it first. It looks cool but it's a flawed design: the bridge is mounted so far up the body, that the neck sticks out very far and thus the reach is like a long scale bass, and the shorter scale is pointless. The ones I've played have also been rather heavy, but fit and finish were very good.

If you want a Fender that does not sound like a Fender......this is it . Interesting design (balance ) and sound , built well and if you can get it at a decent price ...buy it and enjoy .

For that money, I would get a good used USA Peavy Fury and rock the place instead.

Hmmm, IMO short scale basses have more oomph than long scales.

I almost bought a Pawn Shop Mustang with the wide range looking pickup about 15 years ago. I ended up getting a prototype Reverend Watt instead. Then I got precious with it a few years ago and bought a CV Mustang anyway. And then I got GAS and bought a Guild Starfire II. So uh, yeah, I got it all covered now.

Absolutely love mine, but the ergonomics do take a sec to get used to. If that bridge was like, two inches farther back it would be total perfection

I wanted one until I actually played one. I really liked the look and sound, but the bridge position and the full scale size wasn’t for me. I like my short scales to feel like short scales.

Yep, me too. Love the character of those pickups. Not quite as good as the orignal Fender WRHB but still great in their own way.
