Squier vintage modified jaguar HB

Here's the BIG question: How's the battery access? Is it a quick-change, or is a screwdriver always needed? This is a deal-breaker for me on an active bass. My rule is that I must be able to change batteries during a 16 beat breakdown. Only quick-change compartments and Warwicks make this possible. What can you tell me, Dolemite?

Haha, this...

My battery died in the middle of a set on my '95 ATK300 back in 2002. I was still new to the active bass thing, and didn't remember to unplug it after a practice.

I literally punched the back plate in half between songs to get to the battery and change it.

To this day, the broken-off part is still covered with duct tape.

I change batteries like a boss. Pretty much.

Champ status right there.

That is pretty funny, but it still leaves my question about the new Squier active Jags unanswered, for now.

I put an aftermarket hi-mass bridge on my passive Squier Jag, and it cost me only $20 new & shipped. No diss on the Babicz, but I am not about to spend a significant portion of the purchase price on a mod for so inexpensive an instrument.

Where did you buy your bridge? How is it?

Can i add a new bridge and pickups for a better sound? what would work for this bass? sorry im such a noob.

I've built a few Squier Frankenbasses, and I'm always amazed at the number of times people have questioned me on the use of the Squier bridge. There's nothing wrong with the stock piece. You can set intonation and string height, and aside from the shifty saddles, it works fine.

If you must have a bridge with sideplates or grooves to hold the saddles in place, then a Gotoh 201 is a fine upgrade. To be honest, though, I really haven't noticed any quantifiable difference in sound between the stock Squier bridge and the Gotoh on the same bass.

RE: battery access, there's a little door that pops open on the back, no screwdriver needed. It connects to 2 wires & one of those crummy plastic-covered tops like you'd find in a stompbox.

How is the 3 band EQ? What is the overall quality of the bass, how long do you feel like it will last? Thanks for the contribution dude.

Wondering how noisy the preamp is? My Stingray is dead quiet.
I usually play passive basses and I have a Squier Jag with the P/J setup. The P pickup is dead quiet but the J pickup has a lot of hum. I only play using the P pickup. Really good playing and sounding bass. Looking to check one out the Jag with the preamp in it.

Do you have the special or regular pj jag?

I own one. The preamp is dead quiet on mine. Just got it Monday, so I can't say too much. It's really light and not as substantial as the CV 51 (which I own too) which is to be expected for the price. The neck plays nicely with minimal setup. To be honest, for the price I bought it for a bass to noodle on, but its actually a cool looking and sounding bass. I don't think it would hold up as a gigging bass tho', cos the body seems really soft.

It's quiet, and there's no buzz.. it's a humbucker, so it's inherently quiet. I'll be gigging with it soon. Full scale neck. The back of the neck is satin, I'm gonna steel wool & lemon oil it, and the fretboard as well. /Really/ a good deal for the dough. No tuning issues, no pointy fret ends, etc.
