Squier VM Jaguar Bass

Bought approx 15 basses on Ebay and never had one problem. got two bad amps though.

Looking forward to the badass looking Jag too. Went by GC today and played the Fiesta red CV P Squier and it was NICE. Shocked at the quality of Squiers nowadays. Played it through a Markbass combo and it was great.

don't need another bass, but that Jag is quite gaseous....

Fender will sell truckloads of these, no mistake ;).

Jeez, budget instruments these days are turning out to be a lot better made/playing/sounding (probably) than a lot of the mid-price gear that was around when I started playing bass in the 1980s. The prices now are even lower than they were then, in some cases .

Young bassists have never had it so good etc. etc. :p ...

Mine arrived today. A quick first impression : Fit and finish looks good. No problem frets. Action from the factory was fine except for the G string, which had to be raised to avoid a buzz at the second fret A.

However, the concentric volume/tone pot for the neck (P) pickup has a couple of problems. 1: the inner tone ring has 10 detents from full off to full on. It never stops at the full off position; 2. The same set of controls lose volume if pushed the wrong way -- an intermittent thing that's likely a bad solder connection. Both these problems should have been easy to spot if someone had paid attention during QC, even on a $300 bass. Seems to be a fair bit of hiss from it also, but this could be my home setup. I'll report more after I've had a chance to play it with the band tonight.

Played one a bit at GC today, in general I dig it. Nice tones, well as much as you can tell in GC, before some dude started slappin the crap out of a Stingray. Nice neck, narrow at the nut like I like it, clean fret work, will feel better with some play in time. I like the dual volumes, not a set up I'm used to, but I got a nice feel for the flexibility of it all. The detented tone controls felt a little odd, I tend to set and forget the tone pot, so hopefully one of the 10 positions is good enough. Will buy, probably sell off a couple things first though.

I really like it. I took it out of the box and made that video and recording with it after only tuning it. It came out of the box set up perfectly. Let me know if anyone has any questions about the bass. :)

Damn thats tight sounding.

Interim report on the VM Jag: Hated the Fender strings, but there was time I probably would have liked them and might still were I younger and looking for the roundwound vibe, I replaced them with Rotosound Jazz Bass and very much like the sound now -- old school, but the double pickups allow you to add some definition.

I'm not happy with the front concentric tone control, as mentioned above, because it doesn't stop turning in either direction, and when it does turn, it take the volume knob with it. UPDATE:

Quick fix on the tone control -- in loosening teh set crew on the tone knob to see if I could figure out what was up, I found the knob wasn't pushed down all the way. There's a hole in the bottom of the knob that engages a bump on the tone control part of the pot. Once I Pushed the knob down and tightened the set screw, the knob works fine with all 10 detents. I think I'd prefer no detents, though. And the volume knob still turns when I turn the tone ring. But I can live with that. Overall, QC is great, but I still think anyone who turned that tone knob during factory testing should have caught the defect.

On a personal preference note, I'd have preferred red tort pickguard over the brown tort supplied, but that's just me.

WOW...great clip! Must have now!
