Alright gents, I've been thinking about getting my roommate a bass for Christmas because he's been really into learning and he keeps playing mine around the apartment. Now, I know he's really into the Squier VM Jazz since I took him to GC and let him demo a whole bunch of basses, but I was wondering how comparable the SX 75 Jazz (Link Removed) was to the Squier considering the SX would be a wee bit easier on my wallet.

I used to have an SX myself and liked it a lot, but a straight A/B comparison is beyond me. Any thoughts?

I'll bet the only real difference would be that the SX would probabaly weigh 1-2 lbs more.

Do yourself a favor and see if you can find the LTD version. It's well worth the extra bucks in every respect. It's still under $200.

Here's mine:

Is the neck similar? Nate (my roommate) seems to obsess over that slim neck the Squier has.

The nut on the Squier is 1.5" wide and the nut on the SX is 1.56" wide - very close. It's my understanding that the SX has a slightly thicker neck profile than your typical Jazz, but not by much. I think they'd be close, with the SX being a little beefier. I personally prefer the SX neck, but then I'm a five-string player - I like wider necks.

I wish I had roommates like you to give me 100+ $ gifts! All mines do is sit around and eat my food!

I have a SX 75 fiver in Natural Ash, and it is a great looking bass. I've seen a couple of similar Squiers and none had that good a finish. Actually, few basses I've seen overall had that good a finish.

However, it is, as a poster mentionned before, a heavy bass. I'm a young man in my early twenties in reasonable shape and I find it heavy.

I'd still go with it, though, mainly for price. I'm sure it's going to be as good as a Squier would be, and it's cheaper. And it's not like he's in a position to complain, now, is he?

Heavy he's used to. My Marcus Miller, 'Wick Corvette, and Fankenbass are all very heavy basses, and that's all he ever plays.

Personally, I'd go for the Squier VM.

The only thing that really throws me off about SX's is that they're proportioned close enough to look like Fenders, but are off slightly so that most aftermarket modifications wouldn't fit. For modification's sake, I'd take the Squier.

Good point! They're also longer than a standard jazz, so some cases or gig bags wont fit.

Quality wise the Squier VM is better and more consistent. SX's can be hit and miss. I have a Squier FVM Fretless and it's an outstanding bass for the money. I also think the Duncan pups are better than the SX's. That being said, I still swapped the Duncan's on mine for Bartolini 9J1's, huge upgrade tonewise. The Squier is more, but you get what you pay for.

I have a VM Fretless and a couple of SX's (fretted and fretless). Here are my thoughts on the 2:

The Squier seems to have a little better overall finish to it. The Pickups aren't as sharp when resting a thumb on it, the fingerboard is of higher quality on the VM Fretless and the tuners have a better feel to them.

The SX seems beefier, the Squier seems slimmer. I prefer the satin finish of the Squier neck over the varnish of the SX, but I prefer the overall 'feel' of the SX.

Despite all that, I have a soft spot for the SX's. For the money, they can not be beat IMHO. I like them both, but I especially enjoy the looks on people's faces when they hear the sound coming out of a bass that costs less than $130. It's tough to go wrong with either.
