I've had the same experience with these. The other day I was at GC and A/bed a new Am Std P with the CV P, and the CV took it. No contest. It felt better (to me, anyway) and sounded a LOT better. The CV basses are a real steal for what you get.

Squire Classic Vibe Jazz Bass....Whoa!!

Yeah, my Best Buy is also doing the music thing. I played their squier VM and it was awesome...way better then the MIM or MIA they had. I think what we have to remember here is that Squier was never intended to be Fender's "cheap" brand. Squier was just going to be what Fender named their guitars meant for the Chinese market. So Squier has never meant "cheap crap"...it's always been pretty decent stuff. Most of it just needs a pup and pot replacement and it's good to go!
They've been doing it for a while now.
J and R, a well known electronics store here in NYC has a few buildings on one street, one has the Computer gear, one sells Audio/Video equipment, one sells CDs/DVDs, another one gaming related stuff.
Well they just opened another one that sells musical instruments. It's like a bite-sized GC, hehe. So guess it's a trends.

Sorry, I notice that this thread is sort of dead, but I wanted to share my experience anyway.
I've been playing my VM Fretless (which was the only bass I owned after selling my stingray) and was enjoying it but decided I really needed a fretted again too. So I went over to my local guitar superstore today (PMT in UK) and tried out 3 J types while I was there: A CV, a US standard and a sandberg J style.
After trying (and, given the price tag, being mildly dissapointed with...) 2 of the sandbergs I found one that was very nice, which was definitely the best of the J's I tried today and costs £1299. I also tried a MIA Standard, which was again nice, as you'd expect and costs £810. Then I tried the CV jazz and was surprised (cost £275). Although it wasn't as nice as the other two (Sandberg and Fender) I have to say that the difference in feel and sound with the MIA was not worth the extra £535, the Sandberg was better again, maybe a touch overpriced and overspec'd but nonetheless a better bass IMO.
So, in conclusion, I wouldn't say it's the second coming or anything, but it is a very good bass for the money, which is why I bought it
build quality may not be so great though as when I got it home I noticed one of the tuners had the button falling off... But I can live with that for the quality of the rest of it and the price.

I saw a guy play one at a gig I went to last night, and it sounded great... i'd definitely get one as a backup, or even as my main bass in some of the scummier places we play
I really don't think its so much squier thats changing, maybe to a small degree, but i really think its the mind set of purchasing gear thats changing. It would only make sense that the way we view quality vs. costwould change, with the way that the economy has changed.

My wife told me to go to gc and pick out any bass I wanted for $700 or less for x mass, I went in there thinking MIM fender, Schecter,Ibanez, and so on.Tired of my cheap lil epi's. long story short, 4 hours later and after playing every MIM fender, the others didn't really do anything for me, and a MIA fender that was on sale for $680. I got the Squier cv jazz, ya I'm a biggener, don't know much, but I think I know a good sound when I hear it, and brother, this thing blew me away!Wont know about the build quality cause she put it on layaway so I wouldn't wanna play it. (she owes $5.00 on it)I gotta wait till x mass morning,but it felt just as good as any of the MIM fenders. I don't know what happened but they changed, flat out. My old Squier p/j can't even sound close to the new ones. Still can't beleive I pass up a Fender but a name aint worth $300 more, the way this thing is,bad economy or not.

I just got mine from J&R, through Amazon and left a very positive review.
I haven't played electric bass in over 10 years and wanted to get back into it for fun. Tried lots of different basses in the 400-650 price range but just couldn't pull the trigger on any of them. Decided to take a chance on this one even without playing it b/c of all the rave reviews and I'm glad I did. Plays and sounds really good to my ears and I can't put it down. Awesome deal.
I THINK it's set up properly but I don't have the experience to know. So let me ask ...
It came with a little tag stating the height of each string in millimeters and an inspection #.
The positioning of the bridge saddles is curious to me though. I understand why the E would be positioned closer to the bottom of the bass(nut?) and the G closer to the top.
But the height of the bridge is staggered so that the E and G are lower and the A and D are higher. A being the highest.
Almost like it's mimicking the roundness of an upright bass bridge.
Is this a standard setup? Anything in particular I should look for?

Had mine for going on two years now. It's not as punchy as my American Series Jazz but has got a mellower tone that I like. The neck is great, and the workmanship and finishing on these Classic Vibe basses is well above par for the money you pay.
Well all i can say is that since u love this brand so much ppl at elast learn to spell it right too

Came here for these, leaving satisfied. Squiers seem to run from godawful to wonderful. Grats on finding a good one!
Hate to dig up old dirt but i had to rant on my new CV P bass. I returned a AEB i bought used at GC after just not feeling it.....gotta love the GC return policy.Since i had some coin in i was looking between the VM P bass which i thought was pretty good and on sale or a CV for full cost. I liked the VM P but don't dig the bare wood feeling neck. I played it along side the CV thru a markbass and the tone of the CV over the VM was way warmer and more vintage. I could see the VM being a great rock /punk bass but IMO the CV rules.
The CV is the nicest Chinese made bass i have held and played. Its made very well,tight neck pocket sleek cool tint neck. The pups are hot and quiet very nice. The hardware so far a winner with the highmass bridge and tugbar and bridgecover. this is a super bass for the money and i will enjoy gigging this piece with pride for a long time

on another note... played the classic vibe 50's p-bass, what a neck on that one. very nice.
Well, I own one of these, for ca 6 months now. I have a MIM JB also, and there's NO doubt - the MIM sounds, feels, and plays better. I don't think you can define playability by "how many times is this better or worse?" On the pro side of this bass is a nice finish, very nice neck, and obviously the price tag! Though saving too much on a bass, VERY easily leads to full cupboards and desperate ads "buy me-buy me!" Because in the long run you get what you pay for! I sometimes wish I hadn't wasted so much money over time on average basses like this one, and only ending up buying the expensive brands anyway, because they sound and play better. Kid yourself if you want to - but a low end IS a low end, and vice versa But this is one of the better low end basses. Only the pups are dull and unresponsive, and I changed the no name Chinese cling-clang-bridge with a 60s Fender bridge ri. All cons regarded, it is a good beginner's bass at a reasonable price. Ah I sound like a cranky old fart today )
