The tele basses I've tried - while very cool looking especially for country - have been neck divers.

Make sure to try one out w/ a strap before you buy. However, some people are not bothered by this so it may not matter to you.

definitely guitarron. i feel like every time i pick up a new stringed instrument, i get more creative and better at the ones i already play. expand your mind, man. also, don't go by the vote since i'm sure not everybody knows what a guitarron is and therefore the poll is probably biased.

Are you talking about the VM Tele? I have one and it balances very well when have it strapped on. I tend to sling it lower than a lot of guys though 'cause I'm tall. Still, despite it's weight I find it easy to manage for a couple of hours.

Ukulele... Is that the name for the really small ABG that I see in the corner of GC every so often?

It had 4 strings....

Actually I keep telling my wife that I am going to buy one. On a whim, we worked out the harmonies for song from "The Jerk" (the beach campfire scene) and they give you the ukulele chord shapes for it on the DVD.

why not you can get a decent one for $50

why not you can get a decent one for $50

just make sure it has geared tuners... not plain pegs... pegs are hard to tune and don't hold tune very well.

I found the action on a regular guitarrón to be almost unplayably high. (Like about 0.4"-0.5" at the neck-body joinder.) Of course, at that time I had no calluses and I couldn't "play" the thing for more than 3-4 minutes at a session. Except for maybe a run during intro and/or ending, guitarróns generally are playing 1-5 type stuff--pulling two strings at a time, an octave apart. I've never heard (or heard of) a guitarrónist taking a solo, but there have been virtuosi like Nati Santiago, whom I've never heard.

I eventually modified mine drastically (raised extended fingerboard; flatwound strings; endpin) and currently play it upright (sitting down) one string pizz at a time. Trying to learn blues and jazz on it, playing it double bass style. Lotsa fun this way.
