Hey guys,

I'm looking at getting a back up bass for gigs and found these two good deals locally:

I play mostly pick, heavy grungy alternative rock. Our instruments get a bit of a thrashing on stage. Currently using a Randall combo but getting a mark bass 121 or 102 combo soon.

Without playing either, which looks the better bass? And which is the best deal?

I'd say the Cort. It's more tonally versatile, slimmer necked and with more comfortable body contours. But that's just me. The P bass is a classic design and classic tone. I've never played the Cort but it's basically their version of a GSR. is it passive?

Cort is spelled correctly. Squier is not.

The cort only has 3 pots and two pickups so I'm guessing passive? I prefer passive basses anyway.

i've had only good experiences with squiers. i've owned several and played some friends' and my husband's, as well.

Both instruments were made in the same factory. In essence, they are both Corts.

They are the same quality. Now for stock options, the Cort seems to have a more complete set. The Squier probably is more customizable, though.

I have owned a couple Corts and a bunch of Squiers. Every Cort bass I ever played was bland as crap, I would never recommend one over a Squier. I am sure a few will disagree with me though.

Go with the Squier. At a gig, it will pass for a genuine Fender. A Squier P is a "real" P like a Fender anyhow. For about $60 in upgrades, you can make it sound like an American Fender.

In general, I'd prefer the Squier as well however, I'd be questioning that price. You should be able to get a new hard case for around $100 and the Affinity PJ's retail new at $179. For this specific instance I'd go with the Cort considering the price.

I will disagree only to make this thread longer, as I have never owned a branded Cort bass.

But my Squier VM Jazz kicks a lot of bottom end, though.

I'd take a PJ over a P any day of the week, so my vote is the Cort.

I agree that Cort's tend to be a bit bland for whatever reason. Personally, if I were to pick up that bass, given the price, I'd mod it with whatever pickups you like.
