squire vs fender

A lot of improvements have been made to the Squier line in the last 10 years. My current P-Bass is a Squier CV(with a Nordstrand NP4), and its as good a Precision as I have ever owned. This includes American Vintage, MIA Standards, and 60's/70's basses. The frets are perfect, the bass is pretty light weight, and it sounds just terrific.

One man's Squier is not another man's Squier.

There is too much variation between Squiers to make blanket statements. There Affinity series is not the same as the VM series, Squiers made ten years ago are not the same as those made today, etc.

Be specific. And you haven't tried Squiers built in recent years (quality has improved considerably) don't say they suck. I'll match the VM Jazz I bought new several years ago against any MIM or Standard Fender. In a blind playing and listening test (Squier vs. Fender) you won't be able to tell which is which.

These threads leave me curious how much a Fender lover ever really picks up a Squier at all and on the rare occasion ever does so with an open mind, willing to give credit if it was deserved.

I wonder the same about the Squier lover, how often does he go to the music store and actually play all the basses he either can't afford or just refuses to buy due to the higher price, when he feels Squier is just as good and for much less.

Either way you look at it, it's odd that everyone swears their loyalty to one thing or the other, but ALWAYS claims to be intimately familiar with the brand they openly and admittedly do not care for.

It's kinda like saying I really don't care for a sandwich with onions & tomatoes when eating out, but every time I eat out I try sandwiches with onions & tomatoes just to reassure myself I don't like them.
I buy the idea that every so often a new shop may open with a new sandwich and a friend may convince me to have a bite but that's about it.
I taste it, I dislike it, I spit it out and stay away.

Just the same as the Fender lover may occasionally pick up the latest Classic Vibe series to see what all the fuss is about.
He picks it up and instantly all his bad feelings remind him of previous experiences with them and he checks it out with a very biased view and spits it out and stays away.

Same with the Squire guy, Fender may bring out a different line but due to the guys lack of money or feeling of it not being worth the high cost I can't see him spending a ton of time on it.
I see him more playing the Squier and selling himself on how much it fits his needs and is just as nice as the higher cost Fender.

Me personally, I like BOTH just fine.
Squier makes great stuff for the money, I'd even go as far as saying I feel like they are priced low for the quality.
Both of my CV's are excellent basses.

And I like Fender, and to me there's more to the cost of a Fender than just the bass itself.
Just like with anything name brand, a portion of that cost is strictly for the name itself.
There's a sense of pride in owning a Fender.
And your getting a great instrument for your money that can be depended on, and will hold it's value. And many more reasons
.

Agreed with all of that, especially the bolded part.

I think this thread has potential, coming back from the dead and all.

Let me grab some coffee...

I didn't know squires still existed.

I know I have one of these: Invalid Link Removed

...and another one of these: Invalid Link Removed

They both sound and play great, but, what the heck, I'm hearing impaired so they may very well sound like #@%* and I wouldn't know. Other people that can hear well tell me they sound fine. They look good, stay in tune, have stable necks (both are from 2009 and I hardly ever have to adjust the truss rods; true I keep them in a room at 40% humidity) and feel good.

However, I still haven't slit my wrists with the "sharp frets" on either bass. I just tried scratching my wrists with the fret edge on my Affinity V... but no cigar. I must have gotten a non-genuine "Squire". Or maybe they were made by undocumented Albanians in Georgia (USA).

My boss at work is finding new and improved ways to frustrate the heck out of me, and if this keeps up, in order to help me overcome that frustration I might get me one of these...

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

...or, heaven forbid, one of these...

But if I get reeeeeeely angry and frustrated, I may just slap a Fender decal on the headstock and call it even...

So, have at it folks.

Hey, didn't you notice you get $100 cash back on the $1,700 American Fender? How can you resist?

As I've pointed out before there ARE differences between MIA Fenders and Squiers. The Carbon fiber reinforcement neck rod for one. And some minor hardware differences. So with careful scrutiny I'm sure a knowledgeable person COULD tell a MIA Fender from a Squier in a blind test just from neck stability and tuner stiffness etc.

But the point is these differences are SMALL and the cost to get them is LARGE. So if one is rolling in cash, and you want those features, fine. But for me, I'm tickled with the Fender-shaped headstock on my Squier. Almost nobody ever looks at the decal on it. And even if they did I'd have to point out that Fender doesn't even make a bass like this (PJ 5er). Adjusting truss rod with seasons isn't a biggie for me. And hey I own SX basses too so I'm mighty familiar with super-stiff tuners. And it's a small sacrifice I"m willing to make to be able to spend the extra cash on some OTHER bass gear.

That's it.
