SR5 pickup is louder in "Series" than in "Parallel"?

I've got a 2001 MM Stingray 5 (single humbucker). It has a 3 way pickup selector as standard that allows me to choose between Parallel Humbucker, Single Coil, and Series Humbucker.

Strangely enough I haven't felt much of a need to use the pickup selector too often, it's been set to the "parallel" position most of it's life. But my current band has changed that. Some of the material really benefits from the smoother sound of the "Series" position.

The only problem is, the series position is slightly louder. It's not a massive problem, but if it's fixable I'd definitely consider it. Is there a way to reduce the output from the pickup in the series position only?

That's normal, and you can probably fix it, but I have no direct experience with that bass so I can only comment generally.

You basically modify the switch so a resistor or two is inserted in the circuit when it's in the series position. Depending on how they achieve it, it might mean you switch a resistor(s) in between the two coils. What value resistor(s) will require some experimentation.

that's normal...and it cannot be easily fixed (requires a switch with an entire additional set of poles)...

you just have to be ready with the volume control...

Series is always louder than parallel, just the nature of the beast. If you wire the correct resistors from the the series output to the ground, you can bleed off enough of the volume to make series and parallel even in volume. It would be completely trail and error to find the correct resistor values though.

I agree with putting a resistor in. I did it with a spector a while back and it work like a charm Pretty easy fix if you can use a soldering iron.
