SR500 Control Plate?

Hey guys!

I have an Ibanez SR500 that my kid has been using to learn on. Well, an incident happened involving the controls and a concrete floor, and the wood around the knobs is destroyed. This model doesn’t usually have a pick guard or control plate or anything, but I was thinking to possibly 3D print some kind of cover for the knobs out of carbon fiber and screw it down where the wood is solid through.

Anyone tried something like that? I’m hoping it’d look better than trying to repair the wood from inside, since that’d require a careful refinish to hide the “blend”.

Open to other thoughts too. This was originally a refurb job anyway, so not really worth paying a pro to work on it…

Suggestion: Not sure how many have experienced the same issue you described, but pics of the damage up front, as well as solutions and implementation along the way, might present an interesting how-to.

It would be very easy, and cheap, to get a piece of the material used for pickguards which come in many colours, 1-ply, 3-ply, etc, and cut your own control plate out of that. Or if you're not up to it, there's lots of places that will cut one for you if you provide the design.

I've seen a Wick where the damage alike had been done. it was badly cracked, but the knobs were still holding, the owner just used it that way.

and I've seen another Wick where an owner put a metal plate from the back of the cavity to prevent it happening.

if you have access to a 3D printer, you're lucky, as I'm unaware of any stock control plates that will fir a SR.

I doubt anyone makes a control plate specifically for an SR500. I’d probably make one out of pickguard material or aluminum but if you prefer to design and 3D print one that’s great.
