Finally found one in person at Sweetwater this weekend--well worth the drive. I took it down plugged it in and gave it a try. I really liked the sound but didn't discern much variation using the tone knob. I really liked the D'addario Chromes on it; but, maybe that's why I liked the sound. The neck was smooth and fast--really liked it.
The bass made very little sound without being plugged in. I think my SR-655 makes as much or more sound. That absence of sound sort of surprised me, it seems more of a chambered bass than a real hollow-body.
I had a Fender Starcaster that really made an upright sound--but then I had restrung it with Chromes. Best sound was using my thumb instead of fingers. This bass was much more comfortable than my Starcaster--no sharp edges. Even with a 34" scale against the Starcaster's 30" the reach was much more comfortable.
So now I'm thinking of stringing one of my basses with Chromes and spending $37 instead of over $800. Maybe I'll see one that someone didn't like?
