Am I the only one who actually enjoys this album? I personally think it's a great album (7/10 at least), but everyone I talk to (in real life and on forums) do nothing but taunt or cringe at the mention of the album's name. I've found that it's a pretty boring album to listen to if you're looking for a masterpiece like MoP or RtL, but when you're pissed/stressed about something and just feel like letting off steam, the songs just light up. The raw production, messed-up snare, and the overall "screw off" attitude of the album just works when in you're in the right mindset. Anyone agree?

I think Reload was worse than this. The sound quality of St. Anger was pretty bad, and it took a long time to even begin to appreciate what little it had to offer. But now, I listen to it from time to time. You're right, it is a good listen when I need to blow off some steam. Some of the riffs are really catchy and mean sounding. I wouldn't give it a 7/10, but I think I appreciate it more than most.
i cant listen to anything post-black album. if I want to listen to something that sounds pissed off, i can find it elsewhere.
I'm sure you're not the only one, I can't say that I know anyone that likes it, but most of my friends have good taste.

Just like everything Metallica has done in the last 15 years, to me it sounds like an obvious and poor rip-off of the trend in music that was popular at the time of it's making.

I bought the album the day it came out and put it in my car stereo for a listen to on my 45 minute trip home. I listened to it all the way through thinking to myself that with each passing track the prospects of hearing anything worthwhile were getting rather slim. After the last song, I pitched the CD out the car window and I used the album sleeve as a beer coaster for awhile until it became moldy. I gave the DVD away to some neighbor kid with poor taste in music.
It genuinely distresses me to say this about Metallica because they were far and away my favorite band in the 1980's and they did so much to pioneer and advance an important style of music. Now they are just an embarrassment to themselves and have become a laughingstock.

i never have liked metallica (im a megadeth fan) but st. Anger literally might have been the biggest gaffe in metal. except maybe Dynasty by KISS but I actually like some of the songs off that album
For a few weeks after St Anger came out, I seriously considered the possibility that the album was some kind of brilliant satire. I really thought there would be a chance that Metallica would release the "real" album and say
"Ha Ha, that other thing was a joke to poke fun at all the heavy metal cliches and how some bands sell out and they get old and make really crappy music but they're too clueless to know any better. HA HA HA"
Sort of like the heavy metal album version of "Spinal Tap". Yes, I am 100% serious that I thought this was possible.
But weeks turned into months and it never happened so I had to accept the fact that Metallica really had sunk that low.

The songs are pretty good IMO. I can't get past the putrid snare sound. The snare sound ruins the whole album for me.
I really do have an appreciation for the Saint Anger project, infact I got this tattoo about 2 years after the albun came out. I hear alot of rage and venting in the album and I understand where its comming from. I will say its not Metallica's finest moment and most importently it dose not accurately depict the full potential of what they can create but its more of a concept album. The Unnamed feeling is by far the strongest song on the album and speaks to a deep personel expirence I have lived with for much of my life. Long Live METALLICA !

I am not a tattoo guy, and I must say that this looks amazing! So much detail.
I actually really like the drum sound - it's different. and that super aggressive snare really drives the overall production ethic.
What did people say baout Slipknot when they first hit the scene?

If i could record it again I would have my drummer swap out the Jimmy Chamberland Yammie sig snare for hi black beauty - but it's on interesting sound none the less.

Metallica's first three albums contained anger and were raw and aggressive in expressing it. You knew when you listened to these albums that the emotion that came out of your speakers was genuine. The first three Metallica albums received no airplay anywhere and they were dismissed by music critics as a bunch of nobody's. Yet they were playing music that spoke to the listener in a very powerful way. Metallica knew that and they played their music both on stage and in the studio with an attitude that said " **** you! We know we're playing great ******* music, and if you don't like it you're a ******* idiot! " These albums never had to say, "We are angry. Listen to how angry we are." They didn't have to because you could clearly hear it in the music.
With St. Anger, that anger is long gone. You can't hear it in the music. It just isn't there. But the lyrics say something else. The album title says something else. They are telling us that they are angry and we should hear how angry they are.

I love that album. It's definitely one of my favourite Metallica albums, up there with Reload and MOP. It just burns with raw passion and melody. Absolutely love it. The guitar tones are amazing too!
I'm still waiting to find if that is the case. Just like if Death Magnetic is some kind of satire on the whole volume war thing.
Stanger has some good riffs here and there, but the arrangements are crap. Just because it sounds good for 2 minutes doesn't mean it can for 8. And I thought protools was supposed to make music sound better... ha!
