How tightly do you have to stick to your budget of £400?

If you are intent on getting a 4x10 the cheapest I've found for the Ashdown MAG C410t and MAG 300H pairing works out at around £520 + shipping (so £550 ish :confused: ) at pmtonline.co.uk. However you could save more money by opting for a 1x15 or 2x10, and adding more cabinets later....

Your other options include the Laney R4H head, with its matching R410 cab, which should set you back around £378 plus shipping at gak.co.uk (a wild guess that Laney has also jumped ship to the far east for its low end manufacturing!!), or the aforementioned Behringer BX3000t and a BA410 or BB410 cab.

Also you can always consider the option of buying used....

well i really do have to stic to my budget :( i have seen a Warwick Quad Profet 3 300 watt bass head for about £200 from the bass centre dose anyone know if that is any good ??? that would leave me about £200 (which is about $375) to get a cab with.

:eek: :D Those things are meant to sound really good, quite warm (probably due to the FETs, not as warm as their tube amps), but also punchy and clear sounding. A good old fashioned Warwick type sound....if it was me I'd go for it!! :bassist:

used is definitly an option as long as you know what to look for (or have a friend that does). you can also usually find out fair resale prices by doing soem research.

also, don't be afraid to mix and match different brand heads and cabinets in order to get the best deal/sound. do you want it to look good? or sound good? :smug:

It was good entry/mid level stuff. The amp was loud enough for practice with my 4 piece rock band (me, drums, 1 guitar, singer). The amp didnt really like to be pushed loud and low, but it might be fine for your needs, it most likely will not be an equal for a Warwick/Ampeg/Major brand half stack.

It would be just as good as the MAG combos mentioned earlier though, and will also power an extension cab (at 8ohms).

Anything else?

Laney is so often either overlooked or looked down upon on this board.

If you take it for what it is (the UK version of Peavey, Avatar etc) then all of a sudden its very well priced, well built ampery. (And no, ampery isnt a word)

i was just havint alook at the site i usually use and these are the products which i can see that are in my price range. :( they dont seem to sell ashdown so i will have to keep looking...

The Warwick Pro Fet III (there is no such thing as a quad pro fet, that's a different amp) is fairly nice sounding, warm and punchy, fairly versatile. Although it lacks headroom to say the least. If you want a very loud amp, look somewhere else, if you don't need something that loud, it's a nice amp.. I'm selling mine atm if your interested... Although i'm in Aus. I could send it well packed and as a gift to hopefully avoid taxes etc.

By the way, i do tend to exagerate though.. I keep up in a loud old school hard rock band with two loud guitars, vox and drums easily enough. I just need something for the bigger gigs.

+1 The prices are just astounding considering what you get. I can highly recommend Laney gear. The R4H head I tried was really nice. I actually preferred it to an SVT-3 pro. I own the R410 and it's great as a standalone cab with my WT-400. I'm actually considering buying another one, just cos they're so cheap! Laney rocks :bassist:

I think if you go for a maker who specialises in bass amps there's no reason that a combo would be any worse than the head/cab approach. I've had an Ashdown MAG combo for three years and it's really excellent. You can also add extension cabinets to these later. For some reason there's loads of Ashdown stuff on Ebay.co.uk at the minute. Check it out... Including a MAG 2x10 which at the minute is at £125 with 1 day to go. Even allowing for last minute rush you'd get change from your £400.
