Stage 81: S/D thread

It's really easy to have feel good moments when your band has zero expectations. That's why I'm so satisfied with Mental Waste. We put so little time and effort into writing and recording everything, no expectation or trying to be cool with any particular scene. It's all stream of consciousness, anything goes attitude with bare bones execution. So any piece of praise or reward, people paying for a download, getting 200 downloads in a year, good reviews...all elating. Keep your expectations low and you will never be disappointed. The band that shall not be named has been going for a year or two longer and we've recorded one song, played one show and have an album that's taking forever, that I'm not completely satisfied with to begin with. Really stark contrast. It's all effort and zero satisfaction, lots of obsessing over details with no big picture.

There's definitely something to be said for the first approach. It seems like that's when the best stuff happens, when no one is analyzing everything to death or trying to fit some unnamed person's expectations.

"We can't do x because people expect y."

"What people? - and who cares what people expect?"

It's a hell of a ****** way to live your life.

Got out of class early today, so I went to the space, wrote some badazz riffs, one for a new song and another for a song I have in the works. Its amazing how easy writing can be if you have the tone in your head.


Look what was waiting for me at home! The foot switch that cost twice the amount I bought the amp for, an original 1969 Peavey Vulcan foot switch. Can't wait to hear the built in fuzz and temolo sound like, if there anything close to the reverb, they'll be amazing for sure. The is cord way to short to be able to do the vertical stack though. I'll need to look into finding a 3 pin extension cord, so I can keep Mount DOOM erected.

Sweet footswitch! It might be easiest to splice some new wire instead of trying to find an extension for that crazy-ass DIN connector.

If you end up doing this let me know, if you send me a photo of the cut wire I can help find something that will work. We sell all kinds of cable by the foot here at work and it's pretty cheap.

I'll be in the office on Friday if you decide to go that way.

Ohhhh maaaaaan...if only I could communicate to you how much that interaction has happened at band practices. It has been MOST of some band practices. I care zero how anyone else perceives the music I make, outside of making an intention clear. As much of an underground community as doom metal is NOW...think of what your mindset would be if you had some amount of street cred as a doom metal band from the 90s.

"There are 35 people in northern Europe who are going to have VERY strong opinions about this!"

I have to pull back, I will rant.

I had to Google who Wesley Willis is/was. Dude looks like he was all kindsa cray...in a fantastic way. I now second askrere's motion :p

Yeah, shipping costs and seller reluctance are the main reasons I can't get hold of a lot of gear. It doesn't help that the things I'm particularly interested in aren't as freely available here either, Fuzzrocious goods in particular. I'm still mad keen on that RK Sam's offloading...maybe I can go halves with the missus and work something out that way.

A lot if it is tension for me as well. Different basses seem to have a sweet spot. Just put a set of .50-.110 flats on the new Drake and will try them out tomorrow. Upright gig tonight

I know where you're coming from, mate. My current band, while not stoner, shares a similar mentality. We write what some might see as "simple" music - which I'm not denying. Basic chord progressions, riffs off the pentatonic scale, vocals are less than brilliant. Basically, we have low expectations and just play for the hell of it...but we have a lot of fun. At present, we've pumped out about 3 albums worth of songs with more ideas on the table but we're only going to realistically use 1/3 of those songs for proper EPs or albums later on.

Having lower expectations just helps us be a little more free with what we write and how we perform. A lot of people, I'm sure, will just call us lazy but at the end of the day I'd be lying if I said I wasn't having fun.

I was a skinny teenaged doom fan in the nineties, i remember what it was like back then. I seriously considered buying one of the CM demo tapes from the classifieds in Metal Maniacs.

I got a job at an indie record store when i was 16, the interview was:

"What kind of music do you like?"

"I like doom, you know like Trouble, Sleep, The Obsessed, Saint Vitus. Also thrash, death metal, grunge, old punk and hardcore, some classic rock and a little blues."

"Well you can have the job."

I was just so stoked that someone else had heard of those bands. I think those guys were pretty surprised as well. They told me to check out FuManchu and Kyuss, and it was all over from there.

I digress, but yeah it was a different time. I miss checking thank you lists in cds to discover new bands, then digging through bins at the used cd place over and over until you found something good.

"I don't know who this band is but they're on Hellhound so it must be good."

Good times...
