I've met him, and this is very true.Alice Cooper (which of course was the name of the band and became the front man) is a complete persona. Have you ever met him in person? With the exception fo his hair he could pass for a number of conservative businessmen I know.
Why didn't you feed her something? Here's a new one for all of you. I dated Calista Flockhart decades ago.

Jackie Fuchs: Why Barack Obama Reminds Me of Joan JettWho was going to notice a shy, brown-haired rhythm guitarist with bad posture?
I don't remember which came first, the persona or the black hair, but they pretty much went hand-in-hand. One day Joan just decided to become a bad-ass rock star. She dyed her hair black, bought a leather jacket, and started scowling. She turned her slouch from that of a shy person to that of a rocker who wears her guitar slung just a bit too low. She started standing at the front of the stage and doing the most talking in interviews. It was a noticeable and calculated transformation and if it seemed a bit silly and over-the-top at first, it has served her well over time. Act like a rock star long enough, do it unfailingly and well enough, and you become one.
As a live performer, you must have a stage persona. The people listed above do it (lady gaga, madonna, elvis, marilyn manson). its easy to recognize this in the outlandish people like Marilyn Manson and Kiss etc. But even look at the more sublime performances of Roy Orbison or John Mayer. They definitely are crafting a stage persona. Every time they hit the stage they are slipping into character. It is one of the techniques to performance. Even the vioin virtuoso slips into character. Watch some chamber music performances and you'll see that they sway and grimmace and act out the music they are playing. All that helps to sell it to the audience.
Imo, it's irrelevant. How many albums have you bought because they had a good stage image? Music is not a visual thing. Entertainment is, but music isn't.

What is music if it isn't entertainment? And if live music doesn't promise more than a record why would anyone go to see it?
Well, music can be a method of communication, too - whether we're talking church music, socialist punk, or pop songs that let 12-year-olds know that their first broken heart is perfectly normal. But in all those cases, the communication is more effective when people are more interested in you, so your persona is still important. What is music if it isn't entertainment?
