Joe, The E1's aren't terrible with the molds, since they provide a good seal,( remember the seal is VERY important for bass response) but compared to the E5's they are quite inferior. If you are seriously going to give the IEM's a try, go for the E5's. If for some reason you don't like them, they hold their resale value very well. A word of advice: IEM's take time, lots of it, before they become comfortable to perform with. A gig, or two, three, four is not enough to gauge fairly. I made a commitment to use them almost exclusively, and I haven't looked back. I'll admit, I get a kick playing the occaisional gig with an amp, but had I had IEM's through my whole playing career, I would not have to live with the constant ringing in my ears for the rest of my life.

Update Guys:

We've been playing through the Furman system for a couple of weeks now, and I have to say that it is INCREDIBLY nice to be able to have individual mix control. My playing is better since I'm not digging in as much, you can hear ghost notes, nobody is in a volume war that eventually leads to overdriving the inputs and horrible distortion. Also, the talkback feature is great. So, the next step is the in ears.

Great point about the E5s vs. the UEs. I'm glad you mentioned that. How would you compare the sound of the E5s to a nice pair of Sennheiser headphones?? (Ain't it fun trying to describe sound???) :hmm:

Hard to really compare to SH phones. I myself have a very good pair of Yamaha phones that I bought for studio use. They sit at home in a box now. Even recording I use my E5's. The low end response from the E'5s, being sure of a good seal, in IMHO far surpasses that of a pair of phones. Not to say that the phones don't have good low end, but the in ears seem to have a much quicker respose to transients and subtle nuances while playing the bass. Maybe it's due to the low end driver being within a fraction of an inch from the eardrum?

That's about what I figured. But, I'm after as much feedback as I can get. It's pretty good in phones, but the in ears would make it that much better.

I guess it would be safe to say that the E5s give enough low end to be enjoyed by a bass player??

I have a pair of high end Sony Ear buds, that are great when they are sealed properly. The stink for actual bass guitar but just listening to music (as opposed to playing along with music) sounds great. So, I would imagine the E5s would waste the Sony buds...

Well for one, you can't even compare the Sony's. Different animal totaly. Kitten as opposed to a lion. (lol) I won't lie and tell you that IEM's are the same or better than using a great sounding stage rig. What you won't get is that pant moving, heart stopping, butt kicking bottom. However if the FOH system is big enough, you will have plenty of house shaking, giving you some of that same feeling. What you will get is, complete control over your technique, (no more mud hiding strengths or weaknesses in your playing) no more sore throat from over singing, (maybe my favorite benefit) no more trying to compete with all other stage amps, (you mix in only the amount of everything else you need) and the number one benefit, no more noise hangover! That is not to say you can't do damage with IEM's. You probably could do more if not used smartly. Do I enjoy playing bass through them? Absolutely!! Also carrying my whole rig in a breifcase doesn't hurt either.

man it is cool to see you all talking about this I just started a new band and the drummer talked us in to going in ear
so we all bought shure E2's and it was wierd for like the frist 2 times I used them now I used love it I go home with less ear ringing I bring one less bass cab and play alot lighter

we all have our own mix and we use rolls monitor mixers so we have indiviual volume control on stage

i really do not think I will go back to regular monitors
