What is a real PA in your book?

Not the cheapest crap available. I have multiple cabs I can use. For real small gigs a pair of JBL PRX512s on stands and a presonus studiolive 16.0.2. For bigger gigs I have EAW NT59s over NTS22 subs. Bigger yet 4 PRX535s over 4 or 6QSC HPR subs. I have a studiolive 16.4.2 when I need more mixer channels.

I actually have 2 more sets of monitors, and amps - sometimes, we augment the mains - or use sidefills, or 4 monitors instead - but part of what we use depends on how we can get it there - the old EV monitors in this show work fine, sound great and are real workhorses!

Wow - I remember those from the early 80's - they are plastic cabs with little metal prop rods that screw in to angle them up, right? Worked well for us
back then too

That's similar to ours. We use 2 subs and we use a variety of monitor brands. Some are powered. We use a Behringer power amp for the subs. You'd be surprised how loud and clean our setup can get! Behringer has come a long way.

I think that typical setup fill in name brand at will - works for a LOT of rooms.

our setup is with either 15" or 12" JBL's - depending on the place, and need to put out. We don't always use the sub.

its plenty when you push it, and subtle when you don't - but you still have to watch it in some places.

I found that the Avatar or schroeder 12" and Shuttle 6.0 DI'd into the PA can be more than enough - and it makes setup, volume control, and teardown so easy.

that said - if needed - the 4-10, sub, 2 1-15's, powered mixer, poweramp rack, cables, stands, JBL monitors, lights, cables, will all fit into my scion. Its COMPLETELY full - but it fits.

Exactly -
they are VERY cool - and functional. surprisingly heavy - most of it is speaker.

He brings them, so I don't have to carry "everything"......

I am pretty much the BL, and live about an hour away from the rest of the guys. It hard to make sure everything is everything sometimes, but since he sings, he can carry monitors - seems fair enough.

You don't need killer volume to sound good.
You need a balanced sound. Small amps? No, just turn down.
One of the best acts I caught for good balanced sound on a local bar scene was Tiger Okoshi. He had a 5 piece band playing kick ass Fusion. His P.A. was a pair of EV 15's w/horns, but he was very fussy on a good balance every night.

Yeah, when we actually start gigging and making some money I'll probably add another sub. The monitor cabs pictured are mine, but the guitarist has 2 similar 12" monitors too. I also have a single Behringer B208D powered speaker I can use as a monitor.

I don't know what kind of music you play, but I've played hundreds of gigs in small rooms with nothing more than a powered PA head, a couple of mains, and a couple of monitors. Good old fashioned rock and roll gigs, at that.

Any combination or level PA can be effective with knowledgeble people and musicians.

I bought the first B212D used off of craigslist for a great price, expected it to be crap. Sounded so good I ended up buying the full system.

I found a B212XL in a pawn shop for $60. Brand new. Still had the tags on it. Liked it so much, bought a new one from MF. Right now being used as monitors for the band. When I do my own stuff, I use them as mains. They get very loud. May think about getting 2 of the 15" versions.

I play in a hardcore band, so our philosophy usually stems from "the louder the better." And it works for us. We can have up to three guitar players sometimes, but the difference between their individual sounds and the way they play together with my clackety bass sound and our hard-hitting drummer make it all come together. The loud bass is a huge part of our sound and makes it much easier for me to play fast and relaxed, so the guitar players usually have no problem turning up to match. Depending on how loud the vocal PA is, our vocalist copes! haha
