Double Bass Stagg EUB megathread

Hi Jerome, have you been thru the Stagg thread there are I blelieve others that have had a similar problem. Ground issue I believe. Did you purchase it online for from a store or an individual? If you purchased it from a store bring it back and have them sort it out, if you can watch what they do and learn about your new instrument. There is a wealth of information about moding the Stagg EUB. Here is the link to the hum article:

Hi Bluebird, thanks for your response. Yes, a ground issue would sound right though it's more hiss than a hum (which is more what i'd expect from a ground issue). And the main output is fine. It's just the headphone out.

I've actually just bought it online, through Amazon and it came from SonoVente in France, (i'm presently in England). They said to send it back to them and they would reimburse me for the postage but I checked out how much it would cost me to send it back today and it came to just under £100, which, considering I just shelved out ALL my cash to buy it means I can't afford to send it back.

What do you think? Should I try to get get the cash together to send it back or just bring it to a guitar/bass shop that can deal with this issue? I don't have the equipment to deal with the issue myself (as directed by one of the people in the megathread), but if I bring it to some shop and a third party clearly has had a go at fixing it i'm in no position to go back to the company I bought it from. :help:

Okay, i'll try that. I can't seem to be able to contact Stagg directly but rather a dealership here in England. I don't know how supportive they will be of a product that came, through Amazon, from France but let's see. Thanks again for the advice. I'll let you know how I get on.

When my headstock broke off (post #412 in this thread) I contacted the Customer Service Rep listed below, who helped me get a new neck free of charge. Email him, and see what he recommends... worth a shot!

Stagg sound distortion. We plug in and play... it is distorted and un-natural sounding. We check the 9V battery...it is new...distortion....double check the amp...settings are correct..
distortion...re-check battery... = distortion. Use proper pre amp
(fdeck) distortion. I've scanned the huge Stagg thread...maybe I missed comments about this problem. Maybe
an electronics repairman is next? ...or can you suggest one more

Try it with the volume, and bass boost knobs turned down... also, try it without the pre-amp as well. I don't use a pre-amp at all, and I have no problems. The pre-amp might be over-powering your amp...

Only other suggestion I have is to plug in a set of headphones, and see if the sound is still distorted. If the sound is still distorted after trying my suggestions, I'd say the last thing to do is look at the board, and wire solder connections, and inspect all of them for ground-shorting problems, frayed wires that are barely making contact etc.

Good luck! Hopefully it's just something minor you're overlooking, but after all of that, if you still can't figure it out, look at my last posting above this, and contact Anthony at Stagg. He just may know what to point out, or help you in replacing the board with a new one. When I had a problem with my broken neck, he helped me right away....

Thanks SIXWAY...my student's lesson is on Mondays & I'll try your suggestions then....is there any remote chance the piezo will work without the battery? My hunch is "NO", but I just wonder if it might work like the acoustic bass piezos I've used (Fishman & Bass Max) and like the acoustic guitar (Dean Markley Hot Shot)...that is.. "no battery"?

It'll be a great lesson if that thing starts to sound like a bass!

The pickup won't work without the battery... when it's dead, your sound is dead! Just for the heck of it, try another battery or two... you never know! And make sure the battery leads aren't frayed or touching - that'll make all kind of bad sounds!

New tuning keys
Dang, I just had a stupid accident and my bass fell over. No neck break but did bend a tuning key slightly. Tried to straighten it back and it just snapped off. Nasty pop metal.
So, I would prefer to upgrade all of the keys / tuning gears to a higher quality. Does anyone know of a compatible brand that will fit the hole spacing etc?

Finally, after two and a half months wait, got my Stagg...what a great piece of kit! Already filed the nut, shielded the cavities, and sorted the pickup with foam (thanks MATEYBASS) though it was very quiet when I got it as it looks like they now ground the board correctly. Current strings sound good enough while I build my fingers up. The hiss on the headphones is annoying, but I guess there's no solution it seems from reading here.

But I'm so glad I have it. Awesome, and the best bass purchase I've made in years.

Few days ago i got my Stagg EDB back from repairing. It fell off a month ago and the headstock broke. I found a guy who is very skillfull in repairing. Here is the whole set of pics during the process of repairing

The day i got it back i visited Thomann's website to buy the Stagg EDB stand. And found this neck replacement they started to sell.

Unfortunately they did not have it online when i was trying to think what to do with the broken headstock. Hopefully he did an amazing job. I hope it lasts 1 -2 years.

Just wanted to share the story... :)

That's a great repair! Makes me more tempted to repair mine... I was fortunate to have the Stagg Company send me a replacement neck after mine broke (pictures and link here - http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f101/stagg-eub-megathread-344951/index11.html#post12824470). Thanks for the link for a replacement neck as well... This all reminded me that I've been wanting to buy a hardcase so I won't have to worry about cracking the neck again in my softcase. Ordered a hardcase through the Sam Ash website for $74.74... Free shipping in the Con-US, but I had to choose 2nd day air to Hawaii for $38.99. Still a good deal for a $113.73 total, and now I'll have peace of mind... Samash link here - Invalid Link Removed ...

Not sure if anyone else has found this, but I was practicing with an MP3 player plugged in and decide to take it off but leave the connecting cable attached to the Stagg...and instead of the usual loud hiss in the headphones I got a much reduced hiss. Is this the same with others, 'cos with just headphones plugged in the hiss is too loud to use the bass or ignore.
