Double Bass Stagg EUB megathread

Has anyone tried a double bass pickup like the Fishman Full Circle or Upton Revolution Solo with a Stagg? I want to know if they fit OK (especially the Full Circle) and what kind of tone you can get - whether it's more able to pick up the acoustic side of the bass better?

Just ordered a Stagg 3/4 EDB in honey today. Can't wait...
Only played electric ...first thing i should do or get. [besides an upright teacher I have that lined up for Saturday.] The guy at Butler music on eBay said I am receiving one from the latest batch of staggs. So I was hoping the action height, bad strings, end pin problem, and also the ground noise problems should be over with? ,,,no?

I got mine 2 months ago, so should be similar to yours...strings are ok but I replaced with Spirocores which did make a big difference in sound, feel and playability . It is quiet out of the box on the the jack socket, but the headphones still hiss (unless you plug something into the MP3 input which reduces it). It was shielded badly (with what looked like aluminium coated paper) so I shielded with copper and to be honest it was no quieter but it was fun to do. The headstock has been redesigned and looks much stronger. The nut is still high, but careful use of hobby files and a business card had my action way down...it honestly plays as easily as my fretless basses. I was worried about the fingerboard being straight, and it did buzz a little with the old strings, but not with the Spirocores fitted. Best mod so far was to fit a DB rubber ball endpin stop from Bob Gollihur...no sliding at all, but I did have to cut the old one off and file any welding that stopped it fitting.

Also, anyone know the dimensions of the bridge adjusters in terms of thread? Trying to figure out which Full Circle would fit...

Ty AG....will plug in a stubby 3.5mm into aux jack. Glad jack socket and all does not present a buzz. Got a file set for my lil BG work- will get them out & ready. I heard the strings were better these days but I guess I will have to get some different ones. I don't want to spend too much money on an already inexpensive bass. But I guess there's no getting around spending money on EUB strings. I will order that rubber ball end stop now. Thanks again. Take care.

Yup that's the exact one I got. Stops it digging into carpets and floors, stops sliding and I think it looks good...

I just got the Stagg yesterday. New to the EUB...whooooole different animal than the BG. You are right, stocks are ok....'n I'm kinda diggin' 'em. I'm going to live with them for a while, quite a while. I don't feel like spending $120 on a $565 bass- for strings right now. Can't wait til my lessons start in a few days!!![gonna hold off on endpin for now too...bass moves nowhere on my rug]

Just picked up an RDL version from Fairdeal music here in the uk for my daughter, good price too at £445, the let us down on a Christmas delivery, but we went off on holiday the day after boxing day so it wasn't a massive crisis, it's a nice bit of kit, I think they've redesigned the rests because they are now screw in and they fit a treat, the rosewood fingerboard looks excellent and that tip about sticking a blank minijack into the aux is priceless, the headphones were pretty much unusable before I did that. I'm going to get her a GK 200W mini amp next, and she can play it through one of 15" the sub speakers from my Nexo PA, I'll post a review of what it sounds like when I get the amp.

Just got mine too last week in "Honeysuckle". Love it. Had my 1st UB lesson- got a lot of practice to do. Teacher can't believe how good this EUB sounds for such "lil' money-- and he has a 150 year old UB!!!

Plugged a 3.5mm plug in 'aux in" and it did not cut down the headphone hiss one bit. What plug did you use?? ty.

I used a 6 inch cable plugged into the Stagg but not plugged into anything else. It helped reduce hiss but not eliminate it.

BTW after advice from DoubleMidi on strings, I put 4/4 Spirocore Lights on, and found they sound way better than the original strings, but also allowed the bridge to be upright when intonated and be almost perfect for the side dots. For both of you with the new basses are your bridges on an angle to be tuned correctly on the stock strings?

Also how do the Spiro's help dots line up for correct sound?

Lol I'm a BG guy too, and it's been a good but steep learning curve!

I found with the original strings my bridge was not at 90 degrees to the body, more like 75, when I set intonation. It looked like the bridge would collapse except the legs caught on the recesses, but that meant the bridge wasn't resting on the piezo pickups well. Just curious more than anything... :)

With the 4/4 strings being slightly longer than stock, my bridge is upright but seem to fit the bass better and still line notes with dots and have the same or less tension (a bit subjective that one). If you decide to upgrade strings I can recommend them, but reread this thread for the string discussions for a better picture.

But...enjoy the bass as is, and upgrade when you feel it's right for you. I was a little too geeky and did all my mods the first weekend I had it! Lol

You have to reseat the bridge if it moves towards the fingerboard during tuning up. The bridge needs to be always perpendicular to the body. You can even move the bridge (with some force) under tension.

Since the scale went shorter due to the misplaced bridge the markings were not correct. This is not a characteristic of the string but of your wrong setup (bridge not perpendicular).

I'm happy that you like the string i recommended. If you feel that these strings have a bit low tension, there is always the Spirocore Mittel S42 for a bit more. Maybe after ten years if the Stagg does survive as long as your new strings...

The bridge always moves with the strings if they get longer (by tuning up or by age) or shorter (by tuning down). But you can move the top of the bridge under the strings with some force. Just remind yourself to check this regularly.

If you don't need to tune the strings up (because they have settled) there is not much to care about the bridge (except if you moved it by accident, culd also happen inside the gigbag).

BTW, I have heard that the endpin could easily make a hole in the gigbag. Put a hard disk at the bottom of the gigbag to avoid this.

I didn't know that the Tower of Pisa is so long and leaning so much that he reached France now ;-)
A hard time for the italian customs officers...
