Double Bass Stagg EUB megathread

Hopefully someone can help me. I have a left acoustic and decided to get a cheap eub to practice in the evenings (Have a little boy so time is short) I bought a right handed and changing to left handed. The problem is the support is on the other side and when i play it the bass rotates on the end pin (Away from me so the support wouldnt help me anyhow!) Does anyone have any ideas on what i could use to stop the end pin rotating the bass and keep it fixed on the slight angle i play it on?

Hi Guys,

Any takers on my previous post regarding whether thumb positions are okay to do on the stagg, and whether the left support bar is in the right place for practicing standard shifting as with an acoustic?

Maybe the photo expired. As I recall it was a diy bodge up. If I was doing similar I might screw through a couple of automotive hose clips onto a banana of plywood. Clips would grab the end pin, whole thing could be narrow enough to fit in the gigbag.

It might take a couple of goes to get the feet height right for the amount of side to side lean you want, although spinning the pin adjusts the direction it falls away so maybe just make them flat and tune it that way.

So the hose clamps go in the middle of the board and are tightened to hold the end pin. Then lean the way I want it to go and wood should bend? Or bend it before? Wouldn't the board just move too?
Lol wish they just made a stand. They would make a fortune!!

My best Sunday morning effort. Make a karate chop hand, that's your piece of wood. Karate chop the table (table is your floor), leave it there. Now poke a pen between your chop and thumb, the thumb is your hose clip. You can tilt the pen by rotating your wrist but it doesn't twist. If you relax the thumb grip you can adjust which side of the pen is highest. You would twist the endpin to adjust the permanent slant of the bass.

Hi all,

Is anyone familiar with the Stagg ADBA amp that is especially for use with the Stagg EDB? Are they any good/better than comparable small practice amps?

So far I have been using my Stagg EUBs through my headphones mainly. Sometimes I plug them in my iPhone dock (through the phones output on the bass) to hear myself play a bit better. Of course this is far from ideal.

I also have a VOX 15R pathfinder guitar amp but I do not want to damage its speakers. So I might be looking for a small practice amp and I stumbled upon the Stagg ADBA. So any input would be appriciated! Or will any bass practice amp do?

PS: I realise this is a amp related question that might have been placed in the amp part of the forum but as it is especially designed for the Stagg EUB in mind the Stagg megathread seemed a more logical place

I ended up buying a Phil Jones Bass Double Four instead of the Stagg amp. A Dutch bassist magazine did a test of the Stagg amp and this was not very favourable... My teacher pointed me on the PJB amps and when a used one came up for sale I took the plunge.

It works very well with the Stagg and it is unbeatable for its size. And with a small livingroom that already has a piano, two double basses and a EUB parked in it this is a great plus. I am very happy with it :)

In the last few weeks I have been putting all modifications I did on my Stagg EUBs on a little website. This might be of use to some of you... or not.

Haven't seen any for sale, but here's a link to the post on the one I made. It allows complete freedom for tilting front/back and left/right, but with the plastic clamped to the metal pin, it doesn't spin unless you turn it with intent. (it won't spin away when you play arco).

I wanted a very light weight stand to place the Stagg in when not in use on stage. I tried a couple of snare drum stands but found them unstable for the weight of the bass. What worked for me was the bottom of a heavy duty music stand such as this:

My local music store had just the bass of a broken stand they let me have for nothing. I used a pipe cutter to shorten the main tube and also dropped in a metal washer that rests on the three bolts for the leg hinges. The legs are very wide so the Stagg is perfectly stable when sitting in the tube. Folded up, the stand base fits in the bow pocket of the gig bag.

Nice web page! Are you going to add the battery mod for the PJB Double Four? I'm thinking of purchasing one for my Stagg to use for small venues and home practice. It's hard to believe something so small works for bass. I'm hoping it will suffice for fingerstyle jazz guitar as well. It would be much easier to haul around than my Acoustic Image.

Yesterday I noticed that when bowing my Stagg the volume on the lower two strings was considerably lower than on the upper strings. When playing pizzicato there is no difference in volume/balance. I tried tweaking all settings on my amp but to avail. Has anybody experienced this? Any ideas on the cause? I have not tried tweaking the piezo potmeters but as the sound is nicely balanced pizzicato I wonder if these are the cause.

The Stagg has Evah Pirazzi Weich strings just as on my real double bass and almost the same string length. On the DB they give me no trouble in volume/balance whatsoever.

Maybe the piezo cable is not in the right position on the E side of the bridge.
There is a notch where the piezo cable should be. Maybe the notch is too deep (or not deep enough) or the E-side piezo doesn't work at all.
If you are lucky only the plug is not connected well in the electronics bay. Check it out, connect only one to the electronics (there is one plug for each ot the two piezo cables) and hear if there is still some output or not.
