Matteybass, Thank you so much for your posts. I just purchased a Stagg edb34 which will require some rehabilitation as the pegbox is shattered. Your posts will help greatly!
Excuse me if I missed it in one of your posts, but what strings did you buy for the 5-string set? After looking at your posts, I am pretty sure I am going to rebuild the pegbox as a 5-string.
I kept the original strings that came with the bass and just added a low B which was a 3/4 Spirocore (which incidentally has the same silk winding colour so a good match). The only problem I had, though it wasn't too much of a problem, was that the silk winding on the peg-end of the string only just clears the nut after tuning to pitch. I'm not sure if a 4/4 length would be better suited but you'd have to find out from the supplier what the measurement is between the ball end and where the silk starts at the other end and go with your own judgement on that. Regards the string balance, sound-wise and tension-wise there is very little difference between the Spiro and the stock strings. If anything, the Spiro doesn't have quite the same punch but that could just be due to the thickness of it.
I used Hipshot HB6Y 1/2" tuners because of the 1/2" string post and the slightly smaller tuning key. They also do a HB6C 1/2" which has the traditional cloverleaf key but I wasn't sure if there'd be enough clearance with three on one side.
Hope that helps.
