Double Bass Stagg EUB megathread

Just got mine the other day, full shield job is up next, debating weather to put some foam in under the bridge at the piezos...

There is no harm in trying it, at least you don't have to remove the strings totally to remove the bridge, just slacken sufficiently to clear them out of the way. It might be worth experimenting with inner tube like the Palatino owners do.

Does anyone here have any experience in converting it to a lefthanded version?

No experience, but looking at it, you could drill two new holes in the side for the hip brace and if you wanted to reverse the string tuning for true left handedness you'd need a new nylon nut. The top part of the bridge just pulls off and can be reversed without any problem at all.

From what I can see in the thread replacing the nut could be a benefit anyway, so guess it should be pretty straightforward to get someone to do (I have ten thumbs!)

Re Left hand conversion

I have no experience of Stagg but heres my tuppence worth ...

The fingerboard may have been dressed for a right hander.
(There is more scoop under the bass side)
You may then need to take it to a good DB Luthier and get the FB planed.
Just something to bear in mind when you try it.

The Stagg has a trussrod? (after reading next post) ....the fingerboard may not be dressed like a standard FB then.
Actually just forget wot i said ..Stagg is a different beast to what im used to ...lolol

Hello fellow Stagg EDB players,

Many thanks to Mateybass for putting good descriptions and nice photos of his conversions to his bass. Mine came shielded btw, stagg might have looked at your modifications too.

I have had this EDB for about one year now, and I have some problems with it.

I have problems with the (too high) action: there is a nasty buzz on the first three notes on the D and G string. I inspected the fingerboard, and it is quite bumpy up there! Seems the thick black paint was not so equally distributed. I carefully sanded it a little bit, but in order to get no buzz I need to slacken the truss rod almost completely.
So now, the fingerboard is quite 'hollow', and the action still high (clearance about 1,5cm at the bottom of the board.).
I have read that a real DB needs a straight fingerboard.

I have now -over a couple of days- tightened the trussrod untill the neck is as straight as it can be. I will try to sand out the nasty bumps. Would anyone have good advice with regards to keeping the right shape?

Thanks for thinking along.

- update -
In good daylight I checked again, and I found that the D-string had 'bumps' on it on the top part. I changed the strings for a set of chinese 'Alice' strings which I had lying around. Now there's only the G string that buzzes on the first 3 positions....

- update 2 -
Sanded the fingerboard underneath problematic strings straight, constantly checking for buzz. Have got it to a minimum now. While at it, replaced the plastic nut with an ebony one that I carved. Also had a little rattle in the tuners - solved. Rattle in the endpin solved per instructions of Mateybass, thanks.
I try to get the action as low as possible (I play pizzicato only), distance between lowest part of fingerboard and string is around 7mm now. Much better!

Hey, I live in Kennesaw (near atlanta) Georgia, and was wondering if anyone had a stagg EUB I could try out. I want to get one for night practice purposes, but haven't been able to find one at a store to try. Let me know if you see one at a store around here, or if you have one and would be willing to let me try it out. Thanks.

:)

I just picked up a Stagg, fingerboard buzz between Ab and A on the G string.

I'm going to try to exchange it tomorrow.

If that doesn't work, how can this be fixed?

I tried adjusting the action up, have to get ridiculously high to get rid of it. Truss rod seems to not do anything. Not surprising, such a thick neck, surprised it would have worked anywa, more like a DB neck than electric. Otherwise, not bad, other strings can get pretty low without buzz.

Thanks.

Randy

Traded it for another bass... no buzz.

That's the best solution, pawn it off on the next guy... :D

I wouldn't have minded if it was a string, I'd like to replace the stock strings with some Spiracore Weichs. Problem is if I do that, and its really a depression in the fingerboard... now I'm stuck.

I only bought it that night, returned it at lunch the next day... Taking no chances.

Now I have a rattling endpin, but you guys know how to fix that. I'm looking for grommets that will fit the shaft, hopefully a little neater solution than tape and bubblewrap.

Excited to try one out soon. can't seem to find Palantino's in Holland to try, and tried a Dean which I found absolutely horrible.
I have a double bass around, which I do practice on. Hopefully it won't be to awkward to hold that stagg for the first time..
been interested in EUBs for quite some time now, but most good ones ofcourse like any bass will cost ya.
That said, my $200 defretted jazzbass copy is probably the best money i've ever spent.

this is a pretty nice demo of it anyway, hopefully it feels decent.

edit: Wonder how hard it is to get a nice latin/salsa sound out of it.. planning to buy one just to experiment; unless a big sack of cash manages to find its way to my bank account and I buy a RR/Ampeg Baby Bass ;-)

So i'm looking at buying a lefty converted one from "Adirondack Guitars" in NY for $559. I've been playing electric bass for 5 or 6 years now, mostly in a rock and jazz setting. Is the Stagg EDB a good pick for this price range? There is also a good upright player down the street that might help me with the setup.

Opinions, Feedback?

It's all down to personal choice but I think the Stagg, with a little attention to Invalid Link Removed is a bit of a bargain. I get nothing but favourable comments from sound engineers when I sound check mine.... and it seems very popular with the laydeez ;)

Done the foam mod, and shielding, worked a treat, couldn't be happier!

Glad to hear it. I hope you're as happy with your Stagg as I am with both of mine :)

Had the buzz problem with my Stagg EDB (2nd one for me, the first was hum-free but had a crack spreading round the machine heads)... full foil shielding is always good but the key is the grounding through the plasticised control plate - while removing a knob to do this though I found the knobs on mine are glued not just pushed on and the whole shaft came out of the pot! Luckily I managed to compress it back in with suitable tools and it was in any case the bass boost not the volume, anyway my previously almost unusable EUB is now hum-free. Even so I'm installing a Schaller magnetic pickup on the end of the fingerboard for a battery-free alternative pickup system.

Fwiw I previously had the Aria SWB Lite-one, apart from the variable build quality not seeing a whole lot of difference except in price...
