I chose other combo because I use Labella stainless roundwounds M50M balanced set . At times I drop tune my E and the 110 gauge E is great for this . The E also is great in standard tuning . The gauges are 44 , 61 , 85 , 110 . The feel and sound across the board is even , after trying many strings these are my #1 choice .

Since day 1 (about 15 years ago) I'd played with 45-100. Within the past year, I began to feel the E string was too thin. I tried a set of 45-105 and felt satisfied to use those exclusively on my Precision and Precision Telebass. I like a relatively boomy/woofy tone and play above the 5th fret as much as possible. I've considered upping the gauges of the D and G strings but I like the symmetry of the .20 increment :)

Standard gauge in the old days used to be 45-65-80-100 or 46-63-80-102. This gauge is only being offered by Dean Markley now (that I know of).

45-65-80-100 has the most balanced SOUND for me. Balanced feel is a different question, but it's the sound that matters.

I've recently decided I like 45 - 100 because of balance, and the kind of string I'm playing. Not all strings brands are equal, and all depends on what you're ear/hands feel want.

I was going to ask this same question in the poll, and wondered what really drove "the" standard of the times.

I'm liking DiAddario XL Nickel's much more than others lately. 5 string 45 -100 w/130 B, may down that to 125 depending on the wear on my current set. I tend to feel this string is the closest to a snappy steel string. Cost is king too :)
