Standard Operating Procedure for Older Threads

never understood guys that get annoyed with a thread that has been asked a million times. Are you annoyed with those that can't (or don't try) to find what they're looking for in the search function, or just annoyed with your lack of ability to ignore said post? I see the same guys make the same rude post to answer the same old question, and go out their way to open it, read it, post an insult and mock the newbie. Lot's of effort. Just skip it and let someone else help out the guy who doesn't have it figured out yet. Either they're an a-hole for not understanding the rules of this forum, or you're an a-hole for going out of your way to make them feel stupid. hmmmm...

It's similar to people who get all road raged over little things in traffic and act the ass in ways they would never do outside of their cars. Some people get onto an online forum and transform into giant butt holes all of the sudden.

We should get together and make some TalkBass t-shirts with things on them like:
"Use the search function!"
"Put tort and flats on it"
"What's the best bass for metal"

hmmm...the "search function".

Go to any subject in "search" and there are previous posts about it.

Which makes any posts after the original redundant and unnecessary.
A balance must be struck, like with Yin and Yang, the Force, or any number of mystical stories in books and movies.

And then I guess you've got to develop a tolerance for some degree of imbalance. I admit to having gotten a little ticked when I felt someone was being extra lazy, but I don't think I go out of my way to do it. I've gotten pissed off in traffic (who hasn't?), but I wouldn't say I'm prone to road rage.

Jimmy said it all. First, sometimes, despite your best search efforts, you can't find an answer to a question you have, or the answers are incomplete. Second, so what? Do what you need to do. Even responding to zombie threads is fine- who knows, maybe over time things have changed. This is the largest repository of bass related information on the planet. It's great. But still search engine rules can make some searches difficult. Ask away, people will respond (other than the guy who asked "what amp should I get?" six years ago), including haters. My advice is to ignore them.

Right on! They are the same ones that ignore rule #1, yet start citing the rules when someone says something that they disagree with........ trolls suck. The funny part about this is that I notice someone on this thread referring to "so & so", who apparently has commented on this. This guy is one the biggest offenders of the subject of this thread (mr. do a search). Thankfully, he's on my ignore list, so I don't have to see his trollish crap. Ignore function- best feature ever!

It seems that most of the revived threads are due to 'Google' searches regarding an item or issue that someone was looking for info on, relative to their current problem/upgrade/performance.
Many times the issue in that thread has been resolved (or maybe not), or there is new info due to more participants having and posting experience, so it's still relevant. Why start a new thread when info about 50 year old equipment is still used, it still has the same issues as 20 years ago, and the ways of dealing with them are the same, in addition to new solutions? If the question or experience is relevant to the original thread, add to the data base.
Or start a new thread so there are more threads to search thru, with the relative info scattered all over thruout them.

If it's an obscure question and the thread is the only resource on the net about it, u can just be like "yo I know this is a Zombie but I wanted to add..." Nothing wrong with a zombie except when people dont know cuz they feel all foolish. Sometimes I reply to those threads and then see that I already replied with a wise-ass comment, like 5 years ago.

I think the proper course of action would be
  • Start a new thread
  • State your question
  • Summarize the existing literature (incl. references, especially to previous threads and posts)
  • Identify gaps in the literature
  • Perhaps propose hypotheses that would address your question
  • Collect data (i.e, kindly ask others to help you)
I'm only half joking :D

It's very simple. There are certain people on TB who complain about everything who are collectively known as "jerks." They are not happy unless they're complaining. They think they are moderators, and they jump at the chance to school someone about anything and everything.

However, they are not to be confused with those who complain about people who spot 10-year-old threads and revive them to answer the question the original poster had 10 years ago. Those people deserve to be schooled.

At any rate, your best weapons against the complainers are a sense of humor and pity for them living such empty and unfulfilled lives.
I like the ones that will complain and whine about threads (topics, responses, etc.) that they have every right to not read or participate in, in any way.

In the canon of the Roman Catholic church, a 'dispensation' is the exemption from the immediate obligation of law.
As the de facto 'Pope' of Talk Bass, Jimmy M. not only enjoys such a dispensation, but can grant and extend the right to you. Hit him up!

(My own supplication involves mimicking the Pope's iconography).
As long as I don't have to kiss his ring, I'm cool with this.

Yes, please keep your spit-dribblers off my hand :D

As usual, great new information to be had on Talk Bass.

A life-long groveling courtier, I had always assumed that leaving a bit of saliva on the ring denoted respect. Guess not!
Apparently, dialing back on the drool tightens up a player's game just as surely as backing off on the tone knob.

I did have another liturgical question for you all. It regards the photo below. I am wondering specifically, in the illustrated example, which party is expected to bow and kiss the ring?

It gets confusing sometimes.
