Stange MTD...

That bass has one magnetic pickup and a piezo bridge. I don't really know any details beyond that, though it does look like a 2-piece bridge/tailpiece arrangement. The photo (and description) is from the MTD site from a long time ago--I think he'd just switched over from using the "Eclipse" name, and was still trying out different approaches. When I talked to him about piezos a couple of years ago, he said he hadn't really found any that he liked the sound of, which is probably why you don't see more MTDs like that one.

Here is what Mike has to say about the bass:

"That bass is the first prototypes I made using a Ned Steinberger piezo
bridge system.... it blended the piezo upright style bridge with a magnetic
pickup. the bridge is a pickup and the tail block is inlaid and is just a
string anchor. I was trying to simulate the relationship of a tailpiece and
bridge on an upright. I made about 8 of them and Ned discontinued the bridge
system so the project died. It sounds amazing though."

Ah, that's right! I'd forgotten that those were Ned Steinberger's piezo system. Thanks for filling in the details.

3) Anyone actually think Michael Tobias would let it out of his shop if the p/up arrangement was less than great-sounding?
