Starter Bass Suggestions?

Hi guys,
I'm thinking of buying a bass guitar after playing the guitar for a few years now. I'm just curious and would like to add a bass to my collection.

If any of you can recommend me a descent bass and any equipment I might need (eg. amp, picks) then please leave a reply :)

Price range: £200 - 300 (approx. $280 - 430)

Genre/Band: I mainly listen to JRock - so anything that will give me that whole feel would be awesome. Bands - The GazettE, An Cafe etc. (I think they use Jazz pickups, not to sure on that though)

What I want: Bass guitar, amp, picks... anything else that is necessary and fits in the price range.

Additional Info: I'm a complete beginner to bass, so I'd like a bass that will last me some time and allow me to learn basically everything I need to until I decide to upgrade.

Id recomend the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass. I just got it as my first bass and i love it. i spent 240$ and well worth it, it seemed to hold up to 500-600$ basses when i was playing at the store. Has a good tone and i love the neck.

Plus it is sexy! has the blocks and binding...mmmmm

I'm a fan of quality USA made basses..

A Peavey Foundation can be had for $150-200... This is comparable to a J Bass

A Peavey Fury can be had for about $150.. this is comparable to a P Bass.

Back in a former life, I've blinfolded folks with the Peavey comparison to the USA Fender.. they would choose the Peavey about 70% of the time.

If you do not like these bases... you can sell them and break even - this is not possible with most guitars and basses.

Whatever you get, plan on $50 for a professional setup.

I have bought $40 Craigslist basses.. some have been gems.. some have been firewood.

I agree with Nobody, I would recommend an Ibanez bass. If you're willing to spend perhaps a little over the £300 mark I would have a look at an Ibanez SR500BM. I nabbed mine for £300 after playing guitar for several years (like yourself - guess I just realised bass was the cooler instrument ;)) and it has a very thin neck so is probably quite good to move on to from guitar. I love mine :)

PS I'm also British so "cheerio"

Whats wrong with a pick ? I use both but I prefer the pick over fingers.
