Starting my second.

Just got in a couple of boxes with the wood for my second bass project. Actually, the first one isn't 100% yet but that's
another story.
Specs:
Overall design: 4 string fretted neck-thru w/ a single Nordstrand MM and still deciding on active eq. I used a Bartolini on the first one... might try Aguilar this go round though.
Neck: Flamed Maple w/ a 5 pc. center stringer collection of Wenge in the middle and Padauk on either side seperated by maple pinstripes. I have a Pau Ferro blank for the fingerboard but I am considering options.
Body: Right now body will be Mahogany,though I am holding some Black Limba in reserve. Body to have a top and back cap of some curly/flamed/burled Maple I got from Springer's. Body will also have a laminate of Padauk under the top cap.
Hopefully I can post some pictures this time around and get some input from some of you learned TB'ers.

Hey Greenman,
Here's a pic of the neck lams ( I hope ) that I intend on using. The Maple pinstripes are just scraps from the first build while I wait on the full size pieces from Rockler's. Everyone here at the shop says I should call this color scheme " Rustic Sunset"

While I have the camera out... a quick shot of the bookmatched Maple from Springer's. It's an inch thick so no problem getting a top and back out of it.

Wondering if someone knows a good way to stain the Maple top wood while leaving the exposed neck-thru woods natural.
On my first build I did a bookmatch to center over the neck runout but this time I'm thinking I want the neck and lams to show. Is it as simple as taping off the neck portion while I'm working with the stain? Thanks for any input.

So are you staining a color or just natural?

I'm actually knocking around the idea of two colors in the tobacco sunburst range but instead of a sunburst pattern... using the darker stain on the burled portions and blending into a lighter color for the rest of the top. I have to experiment first.

Can you do that on the side you'll glue to the body wings? That way, if you don't like it, nobody will see it anyways? Plus, you'll have to plane them flat and smooth, right? If so, you'll plane away most of the color anyways, so the stained area won't affect the wood glue's bond.
