Static problem with new CV Precision

I have searched for a similar problem but haven't really found a direct hit on this one.

I got a new Squier CV Precision 2 days ago. I did a complete setup today and changed strings. After the setup (I never touched the electronics), I now get a static scratchy sound when I touch the polepieces on the pickups. It does not occur in any other location (pickguard, bridge, pickup covers, etc), only the polepieces.

I took the pickguard off to examine the connections and solder points. All looks fine there. I did figure out however that when I turn the tone knob all the way down, the problem does not occur.

Any ideas??

I have problems with static during the winter months. Someone suggested wiping the guitar especially around the pickups, with a used bounce anti-static towel, like the one you use to dry clothes with. And you know what? it worked!
