Steampunk..

Who here likes Steampunk creations?

Not just musical instruments, anything you like...but here's a bass for starters

Some can look cool, but it can get tacky really easily.
If the player likes it, then I'm happy for them. I personally wouldn't want one unless it was in a display case as a conversation peice.

If it is done to a mass-produced unit, then go for it. But I've seen it done to some very rare and valuable gear which brings a tear to my eye.

My house is Victorian era. I'm in the process, one room at a time, of redecorating. The last room I'll get to is the master BR. I was thinking streampunk theme. Suggestions on websites or maybe links to DIY furniture or techniques? I still have the kitchen and both the full and half bath in line before I get there, but it's never too early to start compiling some ideas.

What are the basic "rules" that sperate streampunk from "hodge-podge"? I've seen plenty of attempts at it that just come off as too much and over-thought.

I know visible gears in say a wall clock is one little detail I will want. Oversized lightbulbs with clear glass and glowing filaments work well. Wrought iron and stained wood fit.

Do I just get on Pinterest and sit back with a couple cold ones and dive into the steampunk rabbit hole?

You could Google "steampunk" and then click "images".....there's lots of pics and website links there..

I'm a fan of the whole steampunk concept.
PC games like Dishonoured and Bioshock, Movies like The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, writers like Jules Verne, Terry Pratchett.
There's something about the combination of Victorian elegance and industrial bits'n'pieces that just works.
Sadly my wife thinks it's all nonsense so I'm not, as yet, living in a steam-driven flying lighthouse...

i. too, love steampunk. victorian attire, manners and attire, advanced technology that is still based on stream, alchemy, clockwork, wood and brass. tenniel's alice in wonderland illustrations with occasional off-period stuff. what's not to love? there's science, wonder, nostalgia and art all wrapped into one wonderful fantasy world. i fell in love with it in the early 2000s when i saw a steampunk keyboard. here's a streampunk laptop -

and speaking of steampunk comics, anyone else here read girl genius?
Girl Genius

my husband and i were making jewelery using real clock and watch parts, little white skulls, brass pieces. i love wearing them :) and shopping for broken watch movements was lots of fun!
