Steelsound 2x12 review

Not really, the last posts before mine were on the 27th of February.

Question still stands.

That before this "group of posts" there was a decent gap since the last time this thread had a post....

I was the original poster and initiator of this thread. My review of this cab is post #1. Therefore, I feel I have the right to emote when the thread is resurrected - even if your particular post isn't the one that did it.

Don't know the answer to your question...other than the fact that Madison speakers (parent company) is slimming down their line as they continue to upgrade their products. I actually just kept calling when I had any issues two years ago...Dawn was there at the time, and she always helped me out. She's not there anymore, and since then I've not been in contact with them.

Holy Resurrected thread, Batman!

Jay

P.S. glad to see most everyone's still enjoying their SS cabs...great deal for the money!
NOW it’s a resurrected thread! And quite a zombie I might add.

I have a lead on one of the 212’s and hope to pick it up in a couple of weeks. While I’m waiting I’ll read through this thread. Seems like a good buy, especially used.

Cheers,

Raz

Got the cab! It is as everyone else has said, decent for the money. Sounds good too, although I didn't demo it for very long. I thought about replacing the piezo with a spare HF driver out of a GK cab I have as a spare but if the piezo unit is as well integrated as others have said I'll probably just leave it as-is. Wish it was 8 ohms so I could stack my Hartke atop it, but as a one-cab solution I'll get full power out of my little head without bringing a lot of cabs.

I guess if I discover anything interesting I'll post here again but the thread pretty much covers it all. Cheers...

Don't forget you will need a crossover if you plan to use the HF driver.

Did an A/B comparison to my older Hartke 410. The Hartke was much brighter, but the SS was far more balanced. Without enough volume the Hartke didn’t sound full, but the SS was fine at bedroom levels. Despite the 9-ply construction, the SS is lighter than the Hartke. Even with the big magnets behind those Madison Knight drivers.

Regarding the HF driver, I noticed a resistor back behind the input panel - probably to keep the piezo driver from getting fried. It’s there, but subdued. I’ll most likely leave it alone for the time being.

Combining them (using a series junction box) was cool - the definition of the Hartke and the body of the SS cab, and it put the sound up in my ears. But what do I do with all of this??

A friend may buy the Hartke from me as all I really need is the Steel Sound cab. A 210 atop would be perfect as others have stated.

Whoa man, had to post this as this thing just rocks when you run serious power through it. I just added a QSC USA900 in the chain and it kills! Clear and full sounding, the HF driver is perfectly integrated, it’s a slap monster, and rattles the rafters - without so much as a whimper! Can’t wait to run it for a while in a band setting. Oh, set the QSC to bridged mode too! What a beast.

I don't think I've posted here on TB in 5 or 6 years, but seeing my old Steelsound cabinet thread come back to life was super cool. The pictures look great - they bring back good memories.

I've been steady now for something like 10 years on the cab/amp front - Dr. Bass 2460 Neo with a T-Funk 550B as one option and an EA iAmp 800 with two Wizzy cabinets (one M-line, one vintage) for the other rig.

At times I do miss the old Demeter preamp to QSC power amp to the stack made up of the Avator B210 and the SS 2x12. That was a great live rig for straight up rock and roll. What I *don't* miss is the load in and load out!

Enjoy it in good health...sounds like you're rockin' it hard.

11 years - quite the zombie thread! I love doing that though, buhahaha!

I wish we were playing more - when we do play, I mainly use my church's equipment (Mesa 400 into an Ampeg pro-series fridge) but if/when I ever need a mini-monster rig, this is it. Actually, I'd love to have a second cab for more volume - they sure seem to be able to take a beating pretty good. Can't wait to try it out at a practice and see how far I can push it. I may eventually get a GK head as the cabinet takes transients really well, and that QSC gets warm bridged at 4 ohms!

I have two issues with the cab - the main one is that it vibrates the heck out of my amps on top of it. I need to brace it or put a pad on top. The cab feels solid but I can tell it's resonating the top side of the cab; a brace might also help mounted inside.

The other issue (very minor) is the subdued HF driver - next time I get a hankering to open the cab I'll check it's resistor and see if I can replace it with a lower value to bring more out of it.

By the way - welcome back!
