Steelsound 2x12 review

Yea it is!

Now, I might have to worry about the longevity of the speaker but hopefully it will all turn out all right. I think the glue will hold the dust cap together well and shouldnt be a concern.

A few months ago the dust cap on my Madison Warrior 10" started to come off. I also did a repair by using some clear adhesive, and after many gigs I have not had a problem with the speaker. Your repair should work out for a while at least.

To update my experience with the SSB 212, it continues to be a reliable workhorse. I also throw a 2x10 on top of it and get all the volume, clarity, and thump I need. The power source I use is a Peavey PV 1500 power amp bi-amped to the 2x10 and 2x12 (500W @ 4ohms per side stereo), and both cabs are punished!

joe what would sound better with a avatar/legion??

a ashdown MAG300 or a GK Backline 600?

ASHDOWN!!!

I used to have a GK 700RB-II and I think the Ashdown actually sounds better than it. Of course, that's personal preference, but I think the Ashdown MAG has a little bit warmer tone if that's what you like. It doesn't color the tone, but definitely has a depth to it that is really pleasing on my upright bass and my son's Mustang copy.

A few months ago, I decided to see what the 212 could really do. After all, my sister was powering it with her 300W Behr head, which meant that it was really only getting about 200 or so watts.

So I hooked it up to my QSC RMX1450. Ran the line out from the Behr head into a mini mixer to correct gain issues, then ran that into the QSC and cranked it up. No problem. I pushed it just under clipping on the head and the mixer, and the cab had no issues whatsoever. Of course, that was just 400W. So I bridged the amp.

I honestly couldn't bring myself to crank this baby up with the amp bridged. I know darn well that 1400W is at my disposal at this point, but when I got up to about halfway on the amp, it was so loud, it was almost unbearable... things were rattling off of the walls... and I didn't have my earplugs handy, so I wasn't sure anymore that I'd be able to hear warning signs from the cab.

Needless to say, it took whatever I could throw at it. The only thing I didn't care for was a certain "boomy" quality to the sound. I do suspect, however, that this might be the head and not necessarily the cab (I plugged a bass directly into the mixer and although the tone was terrible, the boomy sound was gone). Regardless, a little EQ was able to get most of it out.

Very impressive cab. It's been with us now for about 18 months, and it's still going strong. It's survived being on the road, in the studio, and everywhere in between.

I purchased an empty Legion 2x12 cab from them for $120.00 because I had some Eminence Kappa Pros that were in need of a good home. Overall, the birch cab construction seems pretty darn good. I agree with the remarks about the lower quality carpeting, but it's good enough.

I replaced the stock tweeter with a Selenium that I got for dirt cheap, so I'll use the stock as a backup. It seemed fine, however.

I really have no complaints with the cab. It is relatively lightweight, which is nice, and it looks good.

I haven't gigged with it yet and I've only had it for a little over a month, so I don't know how well it'll hold up. I'm not sure how strong the glue is and, at that price point, I've no way of knowing whether or not it'll hold up in the long run.

For those wondering about construction as compared to Avatar, I can only speak for the Avatar in terms of long-term reliability as, again, the Steelsound is new. The Avatar has been gigged a LOT and it has been dragged to hell and back without a single problem.

Anywho, in the short term, the Steelsound/Legion seems like a good deal. I used to be a 10" speaker fan, but i may be leaning toward 12s these days.

Did the cab come with a crossover in it? I've always been curious about these cabinets and have some extra drivers lying around... sooo:p

Well I am about to pull the trigger on a SSB212 cab here as soon as they get back to me about shipping to Alaska here.

All I've read has been pretty much nothing but good. It may only be slightly cheaper than the Avatar but thanks to USPS my last cab was DOA and I am still waiting on the insurance. So it matters on a shoestring budget.
