Steelsound 2x12 review

Yes, it is the same cab, identical construction, identical speakers, just a name badge. I also was disheartened to see the 8 Ohm label on the back. I emailed them immediately, and their response was that the label was a misprint, as they are using 2 8 Ohm Madison Knight 12's wired in parallel.

ok...I have mine and I like it...the replacement tweeter is on its way but I dont think I want the tweeter...

Can I install a switch to turn the tweeter on/off or do I just disconnect it?
Just disconnect it...

If you have the wherewithal to install a switch, that would make it easier on the fly.

Interestingly enough - with the original cab that started this thread, I A/B'd it with and without the tweeter and actually preferred the sound with the tweeter. I was surprised given that that it was a simple piezo driver, but it matched the cab's voicing fine.

^Thanks jay, I'll keep the tweeter in (when the new one comes in the mail) and I'll play with the tweeter on at my next band practice and see if I like the sound w/ or w/out the tweeter...

BUT DAMN!

man!

I'm so stupid!!!

I was putting the cabinet onto a scale to see how much it weighs right, and since the grill is off (I took it off to take the tweeter out of the bottom of the cab so now its hanging by wires outside the cab, hence why the grill is off) my knee accidentally bumps into the voice coil of one of the two 12" woofers...Now its blown!...or something like that, it sounds really farty when I play and half of the voice coil is pushed in like a button!

Can this be fixed?!

I really dont have 40 bucks for a woofer right now....man this is the last thing i needed :(

Sounds like your knee dented the dust cap. I don't know alot about theses things but I would try taking a piece of masking tape and gently pull the dent out. The dent may possibly be distorting the cone enough to cause the coil to be out of alignment. Just a thought. :hmm:

yea the dust cap, that thing...

and thanks, that makes sense...

its worth a shot...the worst that could happen would be messing up the speaker further, which isnt a concern because it already sounds like megacrap when I play through it...

I'm off to find some tape!

Anyone else have any other ideas on how to go about possibly fixing my dented dust cap?

dang, I tried the tape thing and...no dice...

tape isnt nearly strong enough to pull the dent out...maybe I can put my head at max volume and try to make the dent get pushed out like that?...lol, no that wouldnt work...

I guess I'll have to order a Madison knight 12 and wait 3 more weeks to get it in the mail...

Done and done!

I applied some super glue "Xtreme Adhesive" that I found in my brothers car...Its ideal for rubber, plastic, paper, etc, so it should do fine...I made a small slit in the dust cap and pushed the dent out...It was a stubborn dent though!...It didnt want to come up, but I got it eventually and the slit expanded due to this but now it looks as good as new and I applied the glue...I'll let it sit for about an hour before I wire the speaker back into the cab and turn on my amp, hopefully it works...

Thanks again for the help bob, I know this isnt a sure thing and it may not work but at least I tried before buying a whole new speaker :)

here you go...

foam, glue, dust caps, etc all in one kit

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

oops, guess you got it taken care of
hey, if my little experiment doesnt go well I'll look into that kit...

And Fod, the SS cab is the same as the Legion one that they sell now, so yea, if you've read any of this thread you'd know that quite a few guys here find them to be great cabs for the money and that they're quite reliable...I've had mine for a few weeks and so far its been pretty great, the only reason my speaker blew is because I dented the dust cap with my careless actions, not the cabs fault or the amp...

The only downside is that MSC is slow to get things out the door, my cab came in after 2 weeks

BTW I'm connecting the "repaired" speaker and trying it out in about 20 minutes!

IT WORKED!!!!!!!! :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

holy crap dude!...I just wired the madison 12 back into the cab and turned on my amp!...At first I was playing at a low volume and thought the speaker was dead or not wired correctly but then I placed the speaker on my lap (I didnt drill it into the cab yet) and I definitely heard clear sound coming out of it!...Then I turned my amp (Hartke HA3000) up to about 12 o clock and I placed the speaker on the floor and I definitely felt both speakers pumping out good, clear bass!...

In short, it definitely worked out for me! :hyper:

THANKS AGAIN BOB!!! :hyper: now I dont have to pay 40 bucks for another woofer and we can all use this as reference in case other dust caps get kicked in, lol...

:hyper:

lol, I think thats enough hyper smilies to show how I feel right now!

I just purchased an empty 115 and 210 that I'm putting Eminence drivers in. I'll probably post something about them once I receive them and test them out. They'll be my church rig, so they really don't have to be anything special. They will just save me from lugging my main rig everywhere.
