Steinberger Club

Sure why not , They are the future lol, its a win win if ya think about it. Ok not to change the subject but....Being new in the Berger world (only 2 hrs to do research before the purchase ) and only having her about 2 days , Im finding it very hard to find infomation on the model I have. I guess im looking for born date , estimated value ,estimated rareness , parts etc etc. I have found all this very limited on the web. even pics for the most part(not many) Any help or info would be really appreciated. Im really really digging this axe and im even considering trading or selling a 2008 American fender jazz bass in new condition (that i do not play) its too tuff a stretch for me ,just not feelin it.

Coincidence?

Bill, your L2 is in lovely condition! The XL doesn't sound as amazing because they don't!

Its the bridge and pickups, and depending on teh age of the L, the composition of the graphite.

To stop the board being chewed up, use flats or half-rounds, Status are making them currently.

Thanks! The L2 is indeed in nice shape, but the XL-2 was quite the find... it's like new! The L2 is pretty early Brooklyn, #398. The fretless XL-2 is an early Newburgh transitional, with plug-in leg rest.

After a little research, I discovered that nobody makes exposed core double-ball strings anymore, so that made the string choice easier. I just got some half-round Status strings, and they have completely transformed the XL-2. Exactly the sound I was looking for! Highly recommended... :D

Hey guys
Just got the short end of a bad deal , purchased a Newburgh Steinburger bass from on the net. Pics looked great description was great , price was good. So I pulled the trigger (leaving out the fine details for personal reasons) I dont believe the seller was/is part of talkbass at all but just in case. When it arrived the heal of the neck on the inside that fits into the body pocket ,was cracked in 3 places and one of the brass screw cups that are sunk into the heal are loose, I called Madollin Brothers (local luthier)
Some how linked to the Newburgh factory, (forgot how) maybe someone in here knows that info,So I was quoted as much as what I paid for the axe. Now dont get me wrong I still like the bass and want to bring it back because it is in extraordinary condition despite the cracks that can hpefully be bonded back to full tinsel strength. Also this bass came with out a neck and I was told before the sale that he knew of where I could purchase one with out a problem. Things changed after the sale ofcourse . So now Im into this bass for $$$ and im looking high and low for a bridge finding it difficult to impossible to find one. I did how ever get an email from a member here saying they might be able to help me out (fingers crossed)... But why do I still want this bass? IDK ,but I honestly feel a deep need to complete it...So thats what im going to do, any help would be seriously appreciated! oh yeah I also need pickguard screws any leads would be real cool too.

In response to your previous question, you must be a Supporting Member to post a classified ad. Read the FAQ for full info.

Your questions here are a bit confusing. Can you separate out your questions one at a time, maybe we can help?

One drop, im aware of the member classified ad FAQs , I purchased from on the net and being that some people on the net selling bass items also belong to talkbass ,for that reason I wasnt going to get into details ,thats all. And the questions , I was just writing and telling about whats going on with a steinberger that I have ,with a question or 3 in the story , But if you or anyone can answer any of them that would be cool,. I also wrote all that to start a convo on our thread ,being that it seems very empty in that dept.

Some of it is confusing... but I'll see if I can help:

Came without a neck? Based on the rest of the post, I'm assuming it came without a bridge. A few places to check out:

HeadlessUSA Guitar & Bass
Peekamoose - Steinberger Info
Steinberger Guitars - Ed Roman Guitars

It's not clear if you have an L2, XL2 or XP2. All were made at Newburgh at various times, and there are a few different bridges. Only the XP2 had a pickguard though, so I'm assuming that since you're looking for pickguard screws it's an XP2?

Headless and Peekamoose might also be worth discussing your repair with.

Hope this helps!

Does anyone have photos or details of the washers used to mount the pivot plate on an L2?

I have an L2, and the pivot plate looks like it would fit perfectly if it were just a bit farther away from the bass at the mounting point, leading me to wonder whether there should be more between the bass and the pivot than one thin plastic washer.

As it is now, I cannot put it in the locked position, as it won't rotate that far without interference from the body.

Thank you. That is very helpful!

So that's all there is? Just one thin washer?

I wonder if I have the wrong pivot plate then :hmm: I have a single thin washer too, but this is as far as I can rotate the pivot without running into the body. I've been told that I have the wrong strap buttons, but that's a separate issue... if I could get the pivot to rotate far enough that the strap buttons are the problem, I'll be happy :)

Now *I* have a question.

As I understand it, the 5-string version of the L-2 was exactly the same as the 4-string, save for the bridge and headpiece.

I had noticed I hadn't been playing 4's for 20 years, wanted to convert my L-2 to a 5.

I asked Peekamoose if they could do it.

They said 'No, it would ruin it'.

Can a 4 be converted to a 5 w/Out ruining it?

I know the string spacing would be tight.

Thanks

No, this not a new problem. I bought the bass a while ago, and had Peekamoose go over it before I received it. It arrived with some masking tape on the pivot that said, in red marker:

"These are not the original strap buttons - so, the pivot assembly will break if locked closed"

I haven't been tempted to try... I have mostly been using the leg rest, but I thought I'd look into what needs to be done to correct it.
