Steinberger Club

I started traveling a lot for my work, so I bought a Steinberger Spirit. Love the way it plays, but the electronics were total crap (didn't know it was made in China). I could have replaced the original pickups with some same-style EMGs, but I thought that since I was at it, I might as well do something a little different. I took out the original stuff and replaced it with an EMG JHZ set. Admittedly, it looks strange right because I had to use a Dremel tool to carve out the pickup openings because of the length difference and there's all the leftover space from the originals, but the sound is awesome.

Very nice! Peekamoose set up my XL-2 for me also.

I've been using Status Strings for years. excellent strings all around, and they're available in round, half-round, flats and nylon tape, all in various guages.
Status Graphite. The finest hand-made graphite basses and guitars. Made in England.

Go to the On-Line Shop.

Even with the shipping they are an excellent value. Highly recommended.

I'm still pretty new to the Steinberger party... I was wondering who makes double-ball strings with exposed core at the bridge. I was looking at my two basses, (both still wearing the strings they had when I bought them last year) and given the bridge designs, the exposed core seems to make a lot of sense...

@bungalowbill - I don't think anyone's doing exposed core strings anymore for headless, but if you use a string adapter on your XL2, and the grub screws on your L2 headpiece, you should be able to use ordinary strings

Assuming someone still makes them

Ls were early '80s and from about '84 onward, they were XLs. I own an L, which is narrower than a Fender. I understand the XLs are a little wider, closer to a Jazz Bass. Then again, Fenders vary a bit anyway. I don't know about the Spirits.

I'm fairly sure Ls and XLs have the same spacing.

The 5's were wider on the XLs, as L2-5s used the four string footprint.

I'm new to Steinbergers. I have admired them for decades, and finally jumped in the pool in the last year. Here are my first two:

Fretted Brooklyn L-2, full Peekamoose spa treatment
Fretless transitional XL-2

I love the sound of the L-2. The XL-2 (which I just bought last week) isn't quite as amazing, and the prime suspect is the strings. Any recommendations for strings for the fretless that sound great but won't chew up the fingerboard?

Bill, your L2 is in lovely condition! The XL doesn't sound as amazing because they don't!

Its the bridge and pickups, and depending on teh age of the L, the composition of the graphite.

To stop the board being chewed up, use flats or half-rounds, Status are making them currently.

hello people.
I m seriously thinking of buying a steinberger soon.
as I can see in their site, the two models available are the synapse and the spirit.

this drop function available in xt-2db seems really tempting but Im not sure I can get my head around this. Does the drop B function affect all the strings turning them to B E A D or just the E? because if it's the latter, then there is a huge cap between the first (B) and the second (A) string.. If anyone knows anything more, please, share yoour knowledge :)

the DB bridge drops the E string to a note you pre-set using the tuning knob on top of the bridge. Much like a hipshot on a normal bass, or simply drop-tuning the E string to D as some bassists do

All other strings are unaffected.

I found the tuning knob on top was easily disturbed after setting it, so it wasn't always where it should be when I detuned.

There was a guy doing a headpiece which had an integrated detuner on it. A Langley D-tuner I think it was called. i have one here somewhere.

There was a transtrem bass, which dropped / raised ALL 4 strings. I had one at one point.

WOW! I just picked up my first Steinberger , R u kidding me! This thing was made for me ! Long story short ,I sold a guitar to and old friend , the stars aligned and I brought home the bass I should of allways had! its a 3 guitar story and kinda long ,but very interesting as far as luck goes and fate. This thing is awesome! ment to be....

I have a 5 string spirit. very consistent tone acrosss all strings and fretboard.

had it about 6 months -- just ordered double-ball half rounds and flats from status graphite. very interested to hear how that will change things up.
