Steinberger Club

I have yet to post anything here but during the late 80's I bought a used L2 for a $1000 and had it for about a year before I sold it. I was a young punk kid at the time and needed the money. 2 years ago I got the itch to relive my youthful days and thought of owning another one. I searched for a few months on ebay and found a XL2 in prestine condition for $2K. I really wanted an L2 but if they're in great condition they go for serious coin.

You guys talk about the white ones being rare but actually Guitar Center had a small run of XL2's in silver but talk about truly rare... A red XL4 that supposedly was never assembled with no electronics, bridge, legrest went for $2k.

I saw that one, but am pretty skeptical about it not having been assembled. If you look at the pictures, there are plenty of marks that look like they're left by hardware and quite a few marks in the finish in general. I guess it could have been unused due to flaws in the finish, but to me, it looks like the hardware has been stripped. Unfortunately there were no pictures of the fretboard to look for fretwear.

I bought four replacement tuning claws for my XL from BGStainless. The claws are well-machined, work flawlessly, and the folks there are *very* friendly and helpful.

Thanks...I was considering buying one or two, and a family member went and ordered a whole set behind my back after I nearly had to -gasp- borrow a Pbass to do my '80s gig. Should be here soon, so I'm glad others have had a good experience.

Gentlemen, I'm really missing the XL bass I sold years ago, & I'm thinking of purchasing an original XL-series 4-string bass in white from HeadlessUSA. Have any of you ever dealt with them before? The gentleman I spoke with today was friendly, helpful, and seems to be very knowledgable, and HeadlessUSA appears to be the world's premier store for original Steinberger basses, parts and service.

how much are they???:hyper:

I'm waiting for a price & availability quote, but from what I understand, price varies considerably depending on cosmetic condition, rarity of color, and various options. Every bass they sell is a100% functional, restored original, with the rarer colors & premium condition basses commanding higher prices.

Don's very knowledgable. He tends to buy to sell to collectors, so if you're after a perfect piece, he'll have it. A players bass, he'll get you if you want, which will be less expensive. For teh other stuff, expect to pay towards the top end of the market though.

Just noticed this one. Steinberger XL2 Bass Guitar (1986) | eBay The guy has zero feedback and is in Canada, so will probably sell for less, unless a local buys it.
