Steinberger Club

Ok , now u can def. tell me , being you have both at the same time. What do you notice in difference between the newer (synapse/xt) and the vintage (L2/xl2). Im talking ,feel and sound, as if you were blind and playing both.

Well, how can I say it without putting people off who are very satisfied playing their Synapse or XT.
Sorry folks, it ain't the real deal.

The very best sounding and playing bass (let me make this very clear, that's all in my ears) is the old L2. And that's not because it's rare or expensive, it's just is.
The balance on the L2 and XL2 is the best, and because of the pivot plate.
So in order of playability etc: L2-XL2-XP-Synapse/XZ and last but not least the XT.
Soundwise the EMG select pickups aren't that great, the old ones just sound more punchier and direct, in my ears.

Nothing wrong with the XT (in fact I got that one as my second Berger after an XP) but although it looks like the old classic, it weights about half of it and also sounds half of it. I also got a Hohner B2 which could by a copy of that same Steinberger.

The Synapse is a totally different story, it feels great and I love it features like the "straphook" (it balances way better than the XT) . But if I play it after playing the L2 or XL2 it seems like playing a much bigger bass. Although it will be a couple of centimeters bigger, it feels a little awkward to me. Still, I'm glad to have it.

Cheers!

Wow, I had no idea how different an XL-2 and an L-2 were!

Is it just a weird angle in that pic, or is the pivot point (of the strap mounting plate) actually in a different location on the body?

Not a weird angle; they are quite different instruments. I just did some measuring, and there are very few measurements that are the same. The L-2 pivot point is about 7/8ths of an inch closer to where the neck heel meets the body, and almost 3/4 of an inch farther from the output jack. As you might expect, the pivot plates are not interchangeable.

And as you'd also probably expect, they're both perfectly balanced :)

Wait a second, although the L2 and XL2 plate are indeed made of different material (some sort of reinforced plastic, versus metal) and have a different position (which I didn't notice), they are interchangeable.
I got the living proof, I got a XL2 (metal) plate on my L2 and it works perfectly.
Cheers!

I guess I should have been more specific... *MY* pivot plates aren't interchangeable. :) I'm sure there were variations. I have an early L-2, and an early transitional XL-2, both with plastic pivot plates. Here's what happens when I swap them: :hmm: Neither plate ends up where it's supposed to be when closed. Maybe later L-2s were more like XL-2s?

The center to center distance from the pivot point to the far strap button on my L-2 is 7 5/16". On the XL-2 it is 6 3/4"

Yep! The first L2 (the old one from "One Drop") from Switserland. The other L2 and XL in Holland.
One XP in Belgium, and all the others also in Holland.

Hi Neo Land, glad to see you are still rocking the Steinberger!

You won't believe it, but I got another early L2 recently. Too much hassle trying to travel with anything else.

I do believe the pivot plate changed twice in its history. You might check the Yahoo forum for more info.

I once tried to buy a correct one from Ed Roman but the idiot wouldn't even quote me a firm price, tried to find out how much I'd pay, etc. I told him to take a long walk on a short pier, in much less polite terms.

Sorry I misunderstood, you are right, the XL pivotplate doesn't "lock" in the right "travel" position on the L2.
But, as I never put it in that position, I don't mind.

Yep, the old L2 is still going strong!! Here it is in action:

Ed Roman, I read somewhere he's dead.
Maybe he took the/that long walk after all :D

At least we now know what the best bass is for corporate metal! Brilliant.

I didn't know Ed Roman had died, may he rest in peace. I don't think it's right to speak ill of the dead, I wouldn't have worded my comments the same way had I known, FWIW.

I just searched Ed Roman and he indeed past away Dec 23rd 2011. I actually spoke to him when I was trying to find a authentic Steinberger guitar strap. He had one for $200 and yes as crazy as the price was I still bought it cause nobody else had it new. I can't confirm it but some have said Ed had counterfit a few steinberger parts after Gibson discontinued making them.

Well, I'd be glad to have a number too. This is my favorit bass forever, XL-2 1988. I've been playing it since 2001 and just happy with it.

I posted this in headless club first and then found this thread which is gonna be my favorite.
These are my beloved Steinbergers XQ5,
v.1 in white, EMG pickups, 2-band EQ, my absolute number one bass, with an evil tight "plastic" sound
v.2 in cherry burst, Seymour Duncan Basslines, 3-band EQ. This one, owned by Tony Smith previously, is pretty good for slap style

Assuming you can't find the correct buttons, later I could take mine off, measure, and take a couple pictures.

Perhaps you could file down the incorrect to the correct dimensions...

I did some research and ended up talking to Don Greenwald at Headless USA. They just started making reproduction strap buttons, and I received a set today. Proper screws are also included.

They have a slightly different profile than the original ones on my XL-2, but the materials look great, and they fit and work perfectly, so I can finally close my L-2! :) They look like they might be a bit more sturdy, with a slightly thicker and more rounded head. (original on left, new on right)

It seems silly that I've had a number in the Schecter owners club for ages, but never put in for the Steinberger club, despite it being my main axe of late. So many basses, so little time!

Just an FYI, there's a pretty much dead mint red XP 4 string (black pick guard) at the Sam ash here in longwood/ winter park FL. A guy with a collection trades one in once in a wile. Same guy traded in a dead mint XL a few months ago. They have the XP listed at $1400 I think but they always deal and have layaway.

I'm a former XL owner (which I loved) and know mint US berger's are kinda rare . Just thought I'd pass it on. ( no affiliation )

Here is my 1991 XL-2DBA Elite.

I haven't gigged with this bass since 1994, but I haven't ever been able to let it go.

I have replaced all the jaws with new ones from BGStainless, and I am thinking about getting one of their headpieces soon so that I could try some different tunings that require single ball strings. Now I just need a new folding leg rest. Hopefully Headless USA will make one soon.
