Steinberger Club

Had to ressurect this thread...

I own L-2 serial number 11, formerly owned by Pete Briquette of the Boomtown Rats. It was THE bass which played "Do They Know Its Christams" at Live Aid in 1985.

Adjust the pickup height - too low and it won't hear it, too high and the magnet in the pickup deadens the string.

Is it ok unplugged?

Its worse unplugged. Its quiet through both pups tho (I have the neck pup higher on the bass side and the bridge pup higher on the treble side).

I've had the problem with only these strings. EB super slinkies, medium gauge/pink package. I used a old set off another bass (only a few months old) and had the problem, so I took my extra E (only a few weeks old), same brand gauge ect, and it still was quieter. I also did a setup around the same time so that may be it as well

Been using my XP2 since i bought it new in 1989. Currently strung up as a piccolo bass!

Love it dude!

first thing i'd try is different strings, maybe a different brand. if not strings, it's probably a saddle or zero-fret issue. good luck! :bassist:

I will go back to my old strings and see how those are but if not the strings I think it is the saddle, for what ever fret I play its quieter.

'89 XL-2A, (one-off custom active circuitry)
#5623

acquired in Poughkeepsie, NY in May 1990. taken to Newburgh in August to correct a bad ground. while Ned took notes, i described the sound i was really after for Reggae and he nailed it.

i still use her for roots/dub because that's what it does!

Not only do I hate the XM 2 because people make fun of me everytime I play it, but I hate it even more considering how/why I got it.

People make fun of it? Really? I think that's a very under-rated killer-bass. I'd own one. I'd own any pre-gibson Steinberger (just because I think the graphite construction is what makes them special).

How does it sound?
And how does it feel?

I'd not care if people didn't like it or made fun of it...

One of my first basses was a Steinberger QZ-5 Fretless.

It had been badly abused. So a neck sand, refinish and epoxy coat (super-glue actually)... a sanding and refinishing of the body to a semi-gloss nitrocellulose black (thanks Re-Re-Ranch) and some custom touches like a custom brass nut (since this model didn't have a zero fret and the strings just ate into the wood at the end of the neck... sort of a bad idea).

And it was a nice bass. Of course, 5-string isn't really my thing. And fretless is OK (I have one fretless currently)... but the 5-string was throwing me... I whine, but I was a guitarist first (for years) and finger memory is a big deal for me.

Then I discovered Ned's very first bass design which I'd fallen in love with it years ago but just didn't know what it was.

That was it. I sold the Steinberger to get... well... they're not called "Steinbergers" but they are called "NS" for Ned Steinberger.

So in the world of musical instruments would that make them cousins or something otherwise related?

I love Steinbergers. Glad to see this thread. Do my SPECTORs count or do I need to go and get me another Steiny? Because it would be the only non-SPECTOR I'd own. And I'd be proud to say so.
