Steinberger Club

In case anyone is interested, I just posted some Steiny parts in the classifieds. An unlined fretless neck, an XP2 body and an XP2 pickguard. I have some other various electronic parts and pickups as well that I’m not listing yet…hit me up if you’re looking for something specific, I might have what you need!

Did some L2 basses not have the serial number sticker inside the battery compartment?

I see an unlined Fretless was recently sold that says the serial number is on the base of the neck

No L-type instrument ever had the serial on the base of the neck. This was only true for instruments with bolt-on necks. So that statement is wrong.

I have a set of new string jaws for an XL-2A from HeadlessUSA. The original string jaw assembly consists of the jaw and spring on the jaw side ("inside" the bridge assembly), and the knob and thin metal bearing surface washer on the knob side, with the screw connecting the two. Accompanying each new jaw, however, are two metal washers and one nylon washer/spacer. How have you all arranged the new washers and spacer on each jaw assembly? After reassembly with with the added washers/spacer, any trouble with extending the string jaws out far enough to insert a ball end? Did you grease the tracks in the bridge assembly in which the string jaws travel? By the way, is the Steinberger Club still issuing member numbers? If so, then I'll take one! Thanks!

New bass day in Oregon. After lusting for an XL2 for my entire life, I finally acquired one about a year ago here in the TB classifieds. My personal Holy Grail, however, has always been an unlined fretless XL2. In addition to their rarity, the current market prices have always made any that did come up on the market a no-go for me. Not any more…I bit the bullet and one arrived here yesterday to keep my fretted XL2 company. I’m beyond stoked!

My Holy Grail, too. Preferably an L2UF. Never see them come up.

I thought about it a lot and searched the entire internet with no luck, and ended up assembling the HeadlessUSA string jaws with the thrust washer sammich intervening the knobs and bridge body. I lubricated the screw with a moly paste grease. The jaws extend just far enough to insert the ball ends without separating from the screws. The tuning knobs now turn relatively easily with no herky-jerky stops.
