Steinberger Megathread

OK.
Yes they're very nice.
It is REALLY a shame Gibson dropped the ball and didn't make a Thunderbird-shaped composite Stein. SteinBird or ThunderStein. We likes 'em here and my son is hooked on headless("easier to deal with Dad").

At the game as part of the marching band(Spirit 5):

2nd parts bass if it can't be fixed:

Original XL that got me hooked(right side):

1st parts bass, fixed, son never gave it back(his 1st bass):

Like I said, we likes 'em.
Someday the SteinBird will fly.

Ok, after looking at Steinbergerworld again, there is a document that wasn't there, or I hadn't notice before. The red one is an XL2-A, and my other two are not A's... good to know. The stacked tone knob I don't think I have seen.. hmm.

I just read the SteinbergerWorld info on the "A" basses. I always thought that the "A" basses had the stacked tone control. Apparently, that's not the case. Looks like "A" basses are active with a detent on the tone control. Mine has the stacked knob HAZ Lab dual tone preamp. I guess technically it's still an "A".

I've never seen another with the HAZ preamp, either.

I have a pair of the new XQ-2A's. They're definitely nice basses...lots of clarity and definition and the Moses graphite necks on these have a less chunky profile than the originals. I have to admit I've drifted back to the Fender Precision Special lately because there's something about the shape of the low end on the Steinies that I don't find quite as satisfying sometimes when I want a more traditional, bottomy sound. Still love the overall concept of them though and when you want that sound, they're great at what they do.

I got mine (#178) about 1981 after I saw Marcus Miller playing one with Miles Davis. After playing a P forever it *wasn't* comfortable at first and the scale was different so I kept missing notes. After I got used to it it was my main bass for 20 years. In the last couple years I've gone back to more conventional wooden basses, first to Ps and then most recently to a Sadowsky M5-24. But the Steinberger is a great instrument and I don't think I'll ever let it go.

I have a bead on a used Steinberger Spirit with gigbag for $120. Should I snag it? I darn sure don't need it.

It's hard to imagine it could hold a candle to my beloved XL-2, but the price is so doggone low I'm tempted to jump on it just because . . . :hmm:
Yes. Even if you decide to move it along later, the price will easily exceed that, especially if Musicyo are out of stock and have been for a while. They currently have some, but that's sure not to last.
If it's the Musicyo gigbag, it's crap.

Thanks for the info. Looks like they sell new for just over $300. I may try to snag it. $120 is pretty cheap for a bass, and I think I'd rather have it than an SX.

A quick question for you XL, Spirit XT and Hohner B2B owners... What is the length of the entire instrument? I'm not asking about the scale length, I mean the overall length from end to end.

I'm curious as to the difference in overall length between the original XL's, the Spirit XTs, the Hohners and the Synapse line (the Synapse basses appear to several inches longer, but I can't tell from any pictures I've seen if there's any difference between the others).

- Frank.

Looks like 'Yo is out of stock again; how unusual. Only places you might find one are ebay, craigslist, classifieds here or some other classified source.

Also don't forget the Hohners which are basically the same bass but some models are active. There are some stores online that I've seen these at, as well as the sources listed for the Spirits, but they tend to be expensive new. The new ones are unsold new old stock as production stopped over a year ago.

There's also the Steinberger and Headless bass groups on Yahoo.

Best of luck, and be aware that because demand is high, and stocks low, used prices often run higher then new. If you're willing to wait, apparently white XT2's will be in stock 28/9 at 'Yo. Add your name to the email list, and jump as soon as you get the mail.
