Steinberger Spirits

I'm thinking about picking up a current XT-25. I'd loved to have gotten one of the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] but they are out of production. The red ones are so nice.. I should have grabbed one. I will either lurk for a used QT or will just get a black XT-25.

Heads up for those looking for a strap extender for your steinberger spirit
Rick turner guitars sells the “dingus” strap extender on reverb.
$35
Another option Is from bootlegger guitars. They’re offering a liscenced version of the Warwick “chest bow” extender, originally for the Nobby Meidel bass
Also available directly from bootlegger guitars.
The Warwick is more expensive but includes Schaller type strap lock system
I have both coming and will see which one I like most.

@Lesfunk: Which one did you decide on?

Woohoo, I'm pre-NBD, got an XZ-25 inbound! These are hard to find; I had a white boat oar in the past and didn't care for the shape (the tone was fair but not awe-inspiring) so hopefully this will be an improvement. Actually, I posted in the Steiny thread about a parts-Berger I acquired but I promptly traded that for another bass at GC so I didn't have it long (like three days). If it sounds good (or at least plays good) then I may keep it and upgrade the pups and pre later on. Eventually I want a Q5. Hmm, maybe I should keep this Gator dual-EG case I have just in case...

@Razman - You found an XZ-25! Congratulations, sir.. It looks terrific.
Exactly! And in my favorite color, too! This one is in exceptional condition - a ding and some minor scuffing by the jack and normal play wear but overall it's great and very little, if any, fret wear! Straight neck with low action, I'm super pleased.

Taking it to band practice tonight to hear how it sounds through my rigs - I'm thinking the output may be a little low, other than that it seems fine. I need to find a bag for it and I already have strings so I'm set. And one day I hope to pick up a real Q5, but yeah, I was looking for an XZ as I love the body shape. They are hard to find!

I see them frequently enough which is somewhat surprising to me, and I had one a few years ago in white. I don’t think they’ll get any cheaper now though.
I can get a new one out of Japan, but many charge bogus shipping. Or if they come up in the US, many won't ship outside the lower 48 and this has to be the easiest and safest bass to ship ever.
I'll keep looking though.

Is yours honeyburst, or cherryburst? Honeyburst had a much better fade in, the cherryburst was less gradual. It's hard to tell in the pics - the bass looks more red than the cherryburst was. The grain on the body is nice- I love it on the upper horn and below the neck pocket!

And because this is the Spirit "Mega"thread, we have to ask: are you leaving it stock, or doing any pickups/electronics?

If I had to do it over with my Spirits, I'd probably have left them stock and gotten a nice pedal preamp of some kind. But I was not into pedals at all back in the early 2000's in the MusicYo days.

Maybe the honey? Not sure - outside edges are red and the back is all red. My first bass guitar was an XQ-4 with the same finish, but it's finish was cracking (as I think they all do in that color).

Playing it tonight was fun - I need a little more clarity out of it in the mids and highs. I just ordered a Guitar Fuel Tone Monster preamp for it, so yes, an easy mod. My XT25 sounded similar so it's possibly the pickups that need replacing also but I'm not in a rush. It would be nice to put a set of Bart's in it.

The tone monster preamp has a gain adjustment so I'll be able to boost the output to match my other basses. I may still throw a set of strings on it and see if that improves the sound, but the setup on it now is perfect - I'm really happy with how it plays, better than most basses I've gone through as of late.
