Alembic says they make a humbucker-sized bass pickup, see [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
Their T's are $30-50. It's a wonder they aren't $300-500.And they also have T-Shirt sizes
As far as I know, it is a bass PU. I bought it in 1986 when I was building my first bass and really had no idea what I was doing. There was no internet and I went to the local music store to talk to the person behind the counter. I told him what I was doing and he sold me this and the wiring harness with a filter. You raise a good question though and it's about time I contact Alembic with some pictures and try to find out what I have.
Yea, one pickup I put in the neck position. I replaced the select pickup because the tab for mounting screw broke. I still have both of the select pups. One in the bridge position and one in a parts box. Yep, bought it new and it was pretty cheap if I remember correctly, less than 200.
I know they'll sell the PUs separately but didn't know they made them in HB size. I think I'd rather Alumitones or similar in there for the money.
The pickups are listed ;-) (included in the Activator sets: P, 2P, PJ, AXY, AXY56, MXY, MXY56)
Even so, those prices are crazy high, not a likely upgrade for 99% (maybe 100%) of Spirit owners.

Aww shucks - I don't know what to say - one might argue I'm beyond blessed and entering into 'spoiled' territory. I'm not sure I ran the Spirit through my PJB stuff after I installed the preamp in it or not, so you just gave me some motivation to set it all back up again and do a comparo. I was going to do that in my theater recently but blew up my 700rb in the process. My desire to play at that moment evaporated so I brought it all home as we needed to clear out our theater to prop for our next major event. Now everything is in a stack behind me as I type this in my office, under dust covers.
Our theater is slightly different than a typical theater with a band pit in that our band is on an elevated center stage, but on stage in our sanctuary I have almost knocked out other musicians in my vicinity with the headstock of one of my 7's due to our small real estate there. For one of our theater shows I was on a platform with a guitar player; had an XT-25 at the time and it was perfect! Their size is quite practical in some contexts.HA! Rebel bass! Great pic, Raz!
My usual trumpet player for theatre shows around here always asks me if I'm bringing "Marie Antoinette" (my XZ-2) for the gig, after I used it several times in the early 2010's.
Spirits are good theatre basses- headless is good in a cramped-up pit. I bought the XZ-2 in 2000 after I hit a clarinet player next to me in the face with my Warmoth's headstock.
