I saw some molds on ebay not too too long ago. Though I recall reading that the molds wore out over time. I don't think the molds are a reason that they wouldn't continue making em. You would just use a blank to make another mold as easy as anything I suppose.
Yeah, there were a lot of them on ebay for a while.
I think the startup costs, including making new molds, buying or contracting out the equipment used to make the basses, etc., would be prohibitive unless they were able to spread the costs fairly widely over a large number of instruments, which would depend on a certain level of demand. I don't think demand is at that point.
It's a much larger startup cost than just introducing a new line of typical (wood) basses.
