Stellartone ToneStyler Knob Wiring Question

Hey guys,

New to the electronics forum here, I am currently in the process of building a parts bass. It's a Precision bass with a jazz neck with the PJ pickup configuration.

I have three holes on the pickguard for pots with a side jack hole and a tonestyler knob to install, I have been interested in the tonestyler since I first heard about it and am interested to hear how it sounds.

From my understanding, you can install the tonestyler with a seperate tone knob to control how much of the tonestlyers frequency you can cut or boost, I would personally like to have two of my knobs for the tonestyler and the tone knob but I am wondering if a stacked volume pot would work for both pickups? eg (top part of stacked knob controls the neck pickup and bottom part controls the bridge pickup).

Could it be done? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have two tonestylers. One in a p-bass with a stacked vol-tone knob and the tonestyler. The second was in a jazz bass with a vol, blend and tonestyler. So, I'm not sure how your stacked vol-vol would work. But, I found if you contact Stellar directly, they'll tell you exactly how to wire it or if it's even possible. And, they'll email you back quickly. I found they are very responsive. Good luck...sounds like an interesting application.

The Tonestyler is an integral part of the basses we're building (soon!). From our experience, having a pot to control the amount of tonal coloration is a necessity, not an option.

I'm not following the "pot to control the amount of tonal coloration". Could you elaborate?

I thought the Tonestyler replaces the tone pot and then you just have vol or vol/vol or vol/blend depending on the number of pickups.

I can't speak for JLS but I can speak to the tonestyler setup I have in my p-bass. I have a stacked vol-tone pot and the tonestyler. I use the tonestyler to select a cap and then use the tone control to further "shape" the selected cap similar to how the stock p-bass was setup except now I have multiple caps to choose from. This is my simplistic view of how a tone pot and a tonestyler combo works for me and it works great. YMMV.....

Stellar tone emailed me back ASAP and sorted my issue, some of the best customer support I have encountered! Every possible configuration was explained to me and thoroughly shown.
I decided to go with a volume/tonal coloration stacked knob, blend knob and the tonestyler. I will keep you posted on how it goes! Thanks everyone for contributing.

That's what I'm talking about!

Since we're ancient guys, we've been liking the lower positions on the tonestyler, dialing in w/the tone pot. It's possible to have a totally off position, but still have usable, musical, (relatively) unmuddy tone; we also note that there are sweetspots on each Tonestyler setting, that you can find with the tone pot.
