Stephen Strasburg

He might win tonight, but players who are rushed up to the majors before they ready generally don't pan out too well. I hope he succeeds, but I'm afraid they are calling him up much too soon. I would rather see him dominate in AAA for a year or two.

He has a 1.3 ERA in 11 starts. If I was WAS I would probably be ready to give him a shot. He seems ready and hasn't struggled at all.

I'm going with 6 IP, 6k, 4 hits, and 1 ER. Its against the Pirates, and I don't think they stand much of a chance against Stras. He won't go long into the game because of his pitch count limits.

Stanton is also getting the call to the bigs today, and I'm much more excited about that. Guy has all the tools to be an allstar. I'm thinking he goes 1-4 at the plate.

IMO pitching a perfect game is the only way he can live up to the ridiculous amount of hype...

-100.

I'm watching the game now, and his stuff is NASTY. He is worth the hype with his stuff alone, how else could you judge a pitcher in his first start. He's well worth the hype, IMO. Hopefully he can stay healthy throughout his career. Pitchers with that nasty of a breaking ball tend to have shoulder and/or elbow issues.

Well, he went 7.0 in 94 pitches...2 earned runs, 4 hits, 0 walks, but 14 Ks:eek:. Nice start!!!

Kerry Wood ring a bell? Struck out 20 in a single game as a 19-year old rookie, Cubs wore out his arm and now he is a middle of the road reliever. Just cuz he has the talent doesn't mean he is ready for the workload. If Washington is smart with him, and resists the temptation to overuse him, maybe he will have a nice career. He certainly has the potential to do just that.

WOW. I knew the kid was good, but have remained VERY hesitant to buy into the hype. As a Braves fan, I'm scared of this kid being in the NL East. If he can show consistency in the Bigs the way he did in the minors, he will be one of the most dominant pitchers of his generation.

They've said they won't start him on short rest, and they aren't letting him over 100 pitches, but if he keeps this up I honestly don't see them sticking with either. They need the help, and if he keeps dominating, I don't see them resisting temptation,

I agree but also (kind of) disagree. To me it kind of depends on how the season pans out for Wash. If they start to get into the boiler room of the division, then I don't see them pushing him too far. For obvious reasons, it's just not as important to get him out there as it is to preserve that arm for the long run. Kerry Wood was mentioned earlier for wrecking his arm early, and he was also the first name that popped into my head. Another guy who comes to mind is Mark Prior, he had electrifying stuff comparable to Wood and Strasburg, and now no team even wants his services. Coincidentally enough, both Prior and Wood were on the Cubs. Maybe it's a coincidence, but Strasburg better be happy he's not in Chicago.

But I digress....the point I was getting at was, if the Nationals make a run at the division or Wild Card, then maybe. But if they are as horrible as they've been in recent years, than no way. But as of now they have a chance since no one in the NL East looks like they want to run away with it.

That's all true. Prior and Wood both premiered in Chicago when the Cubs were trying to make world series runs. The Cubs even dropped to a 4 man rotation for much of those seasons. Atlanta seems to be on track to upset in the NL east, and Philly just can't get it together when missing a starter or 2.

I was skeptical at first, but I definitely stand corrected after seeing him throw last night. Great stuff.

The only thing that remains to be seen is how he'll do against a decent team. It's one thing to dominate Pittsburgh, but I'm really curious to see what happens when he faces San Diego, St. Louis, Philadelphia, someone with a more formidable lineup.

But being a Denverite, I have to say that he has a long ways to go to catch up to our Ubaldo Jimenez! 11-1, ERA under one!

He'll be very good. Another pitcher that came in nearly as hyped was Roger Clemens. He won his first game as a 21-year old after 18 minor league starts. The only difference was that Clemens pitched a half season in the year that he got drafted while Strasburg did not pitch last year.

Clemons pitched 7 gave up 4 runs on 7 hits (1 HR) 1 BB and 7 Ks. He finished his rookie season at 9-4 with a 4.32 and 6th in Rookie of the Year voting. I suspect that Strasburg will do even better in his first year and will be a top-of-the-rotation guy as long as he stays healthy..
