My "day job" is in branding and brand marketing. I won't go into detail about what I do, but I will simply say that while there's lots and lots of people out there who claim to understand this space, I do this for a living at a high level. I have worked in top marketing capacities at a few different top tier Fortune 500 firms known to have effective marketing. I'm not bragging, I'm just laying my credentials on the table.

Rarely have I seen a decision as poor as this. Beyond confusion, Ernie Ball is going to effectively destroy a marque premium brand (Musicman Sterling Bass).

Very very poor branding decision. Stunningly bad. Hard to believe. Ernie Ball - if you are reading this I strongly urge you to adjust this plan by more explicitly separating out the budget line (ie: call it something else for goodness sake).

My credentials: I buy stuff.

I agree, it's a very unfortunate choice of brand name.

Maybe something a little less confusing like "Ballz"

I know some of you guys treasure the MIA'ness of your MIA Musicman basses, but are these new "Sterling by Musicman" basses any good? I know it's not a "real" Stingray or Sterling, but are they worthy of having the Musicman name on them?

Are G&L Tributes worthy of the G&L name? I think so and feel the same on these SbMM basses based on what I tried at NAMM.

Amazing how much hand wringing and bunched panties there are over these budget basses few have laid hands and ears on.

I completely agree! I've got an L2500 Tribute and it's a great bass! Would I rather have a USA G&L? Of course, but I'm not at all embarrassed to play the Tribute.

I don't completely agree. Anyone in the market for a "professional" US made quality instrument is going to know the difference between the budget brand and the higher quality one. No one will be thinking "oh, doesn't that $1500 bass have the same name as the $600 bass?". Anyone looking to spend $1500 on a bass knows the difference.

That said, I don't think the Sterling name is all that well known.

+1. Marketing is not a hard science. It's not going to matter when you are buying in a certain upper price bracket, where there is greater tendency to be informed. There are buyers in the market who will readily distinguish between pre-Gibson, post Gibson Tobias, pre-CBS, post CBS, Pre St Louis, Offshore this and that, 60s pickup spacing, 70s pickup spacing, different plastic, paint or rubber grommet suppliers, pickups with one more more coil winding than 5 years ago, springs with one less coil than yesterday, ... etc...It's certainly going to impress the uninformed but it is unlikely to hurt their reputation. If the theory were true, many companies would be dead and buried, Fender, PRS etc etc amongst them.

Really? First, I'm too old to be any kind of "boy", I'm sorry to report, and I'm not given to hissy fits. I retired from a job in which anything resembling a "hissy fit" could get you room temperature, so I still tend to steer clear. So, as you say, "nice try".

You might want to go back through this thread and re-read what I've written. I'm not the least bit upset with anyone's opinion, although if I think the information is wrong, I might point that out.

This concept of "I think the name sucks and they should change it" is a bit silly. It's over and done, it is a non-issue; as I said earlier, there is no recall mechanism.

But that's not enough. Then we have to get into whether or not the boss is an egomaniac, blah blah blah. Well, fine. We all have our egos, don't we? I certainly do. Anyone without ego, please check your pulse.
