Steve Lukather talks about his encounters with Prince.

This is interesting. In terms of musical talent and skill, Prince had nothing on Lukather. In the studio, they were equals. Of course, Prince was a superior in terms of charisma and live performance.

I guess Prince gave Lukather the “Rick James” treatment. In a way it was a backhanded compliments to someone he saw as a rival.

Not sure I agree that Luke’s level of talent is beyond Prince’s. Not sure anyone’s talent is. But for sure, Luke made a career out of being excellent, consistent, and easy to work with. Prince made one out of being enigmatic.

I’m a huge fan of both of them, but not for one moment do I think Prince would have been a good hang in the collegial sense.

Not sure I agree that Luke’s level of talent is beyond Prince’s. Not sure anyone’s talent is. But for sure, Luke made a career out of being excellent, consistent, and easy to work with. Prince made one out of being enigmatic.

I’m a huge fan of both of them, but not for one moment do I think Prince would have been a good hang in the collegial sense.

I did not say Lukather was better than Prince, but I suspect Lukather is a more complete guitarist and he is a guy who can come into a studio and write out charts or play from charts. Prince would great at realizing his vision, Lukather could recognize someone else’s vision in a way Prince could not do as easily.

Prince was probably better a laying Funk rhythm than Lukather, although Lukather has a lot of Funk and R&B discography. I don’t believe Prince had more solo chops than Lukather, but Prince was probably a better showman on guitar than anyone outside of the Metal guys. Prince could probably do great in that style, but they probably would not accept him because of the music he was most known for playing.

His mannerism's and delivery have left me wondering if Doc Brown was his father.

There’s a book called “The Gospel According to Luke”. It’s on my reading list but I haven’t gotten around to it yet.

It's a GREAT book. Like Guy Pratt's book (which has a similar story but with Michael Jackson), it's full of great information, stories, and examples of what NOT to do if you don't want to die young. It's amazing that both Guy and Steve are still alive and functional.

saw Toto this year. They were absolutely great. Luke was funny. at one point he said "this next song is for all the beautiful women I'll never be with".

Rhythm section was amazing too. John Pierce and Shannon Forest absolutely killed
